Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler depicts a barefoot woman standing, her head bowed left and her dark hair streaming back. She wears a sleeveless gown of deep blue and rust-red that billows around her legs; blue contours and bold outlines sculpt folds and shadows. Both hands rise to her chest with splayed fingers, as if feeling a surge of inner music. The background is a flat ochre field punctuated by red splashes. A greenish cast to her skin and rhythmic lines heighten the feeling of suspended ecstasy. Her bare feet rest on a ledge; the left foot angles outward, stepping forward. The brushed ochre background shows swirls and thin patches as red patches drift upward like loose petals. Hodler, Switzerland’s foremost painter of the fin-de-siècle, reached artistic maturity when he created "Femme en Extase (Woman in Ecstasy)." Rising from a childhood scarred by poverty and loss, he forged a style he called “parallelism,” emphasizing rhythmic repetition, symmetry, and archetypal expression. In the early 1900s, Hodler created a series of monumental figure studies representing human “states of being” like joy, grief, desire, and transcendence. "Femme en Extase" belongs to this body of work, presenting the female form not as portrait but as an emblem of rapture, surrender, and timeless archetype. At this stage, he was celebrated across Europe, embraced by the Vienna and Berlin Secessionists, who admired how he fused realism with symbolism. Hodler’s stylized figures, with their simplified planes and dramatic gestures, anticipated expressionist explorations of inner life and emotional truth. Critics sometimes dismissed his theatricality, but his quest to reveal universal emotions through the human body left a lasting imprint on modern art. His work helped define Swiss national identity while influencing a generation of European modernists who sought to merge the physical and spiritual in painting.

Margo Veillon was a Swiss artist (Swiss father and Austrian mother) who was born, lived, worked, and died in Cairo, Egypt. She is known for her varied paintings, but also produced watercolors, drawings, prints, and other art forms. In this abstract acrylic portrait, we see a woman from Upper Egypt with her eyes closed and a serene, serious look on her face. Some wisps of her wavy dark hair are shown. She is wearing a black head covering and black abaya, and has large, noticeable golden jewelry, specifically a pair of large pair of hoop earrings and several sizeable necklaces. Her right hand is touching the round pendant of one of the necklaces. The style of the painting is reminiscent of cubism. It was a frequent form of expression for Veillon after she studied art for a few years in France and Switzerland before returning to Egypt in 1932. She routinely traveled, but Cairo remained her home until her passing in 2003. Shortly before her death, she concluded an agreement with the American University in Cairo to preserve her work. Her entire atelier was transferred to the AUC, where it remains as part of the university's art collection.

The Chocolate Girl (aka La Belle Chocolatière or Das Schokoladenmädchen) is one of the most prominent pastels of the Genevan artist Jean-Étienne Liotard. In fact, many of the artist’s contemporaries classed “The Chocolate Girl” as his masterpiece. It depicts a young fair-skinned woman, in profile, carrying a dark tray with a porcelain chocolate cup on a "galleried" silver saucer next to a clear glass of water. The cup in which the chocolate is served is a trembleuse, originally used by people with shaking hands to avoid spilling, but in the 18th century strongly associated with drinking chocolate, which was then brewed rather strong and frothy. Around the saucer is some beige material, perhaps food or a napkin. Theories concerning the girl's pink headdress run from a cap cover to an echo of the colorful regional caps. The girl's apron features a small light brown bodice. On February 3, 1745, Italian writer and art collector Francesco Algarotti purchased the painting directly from Liotard in Venice. By February 13, 1751, it was part of the collection of August III of Poland who wrote to his friend Pierre-Jean Mariette: “I have bought a pastel picture about three feet high by the celebrated Liotard. It shows a young German chambermaid in profile, carrying a tray with a glass of water and a cup of chocolate. The picture is almost devoid of shadows, with a pale background, the light being furnished by two windows reflected in the glass. It is painted in half-tones with imperceptible graduations of light and with a perfect modeling...and although it is a European picture it could appeal to the Chinese who, as you know, are sworn enemies of shadows. With regard to the perfection of the work, it is a Holbein in pastel.” Though normally described as a "maid", it is believed that the model was a banker's daughter from Vienna: Charlotte Baldauf, later Countess Drietrichstein.
