Honestly: while I was learning to tie a takatekote (the folks at my local rope dojo required you to be able to put one on somebody in under 4m - I'd ultimately get down to 2m36s 'cuz I'm a crazy person) I just tied it on one of my chairs, with a stuffed animal providing the 'arms' counterweight.
