On the other hand, I've wished for a more faithful adaptation of the book ever since I read it, with Rambo and Teasle both having their good and bad points so you're never quite sure who you should be rooting for, rather than an obvious hero and villain.

First Blood, comparatively speaking, fares better than the bastardization of Death Wish but still feels like its holding back. Rambo in the book is a villain who slaughters indiscriminately, mostly cops, and Sheriff Teasle is more sympathetic, finding commonality with Rambo. #RazorgirlReads

I think a lot of people who watch it don't catch that, but it's a crucial detail. Teasle was a guy with PTSD too and his way of coping was to control rather to disconnect like John does. Kind of the other side of the PTSD coin. And Trautman, who also has PTSD and is a bigger maniac than Rambo.

Resonates? Taking up arms as a scrappy underdog - despite being a massive majority in some states - is among their deepest desires! Every one of them thinks they're John Rambo, even though most of them might make it to being Sherriff Teasle on the best of days.

One thing I didn’t expect, and that I’m not sure how to talk about, is that Teasle has the Shining from The Shining. Really! He gets glimpses and flashes, and it’s never explained. Maybe every novelist was more credulous back in 1972. Why does a Kentucky cop have the Shining from The Shining?

Planning a walk for tomorrow that would take me down a rural highway. Can't help but picture Brian Dennehy as Sheriff Will Teasle rolling up to ask me if I'm lost, boyo, and then then trying cut my hair down at the substation.

There is something about this that I really, really love. That kind of display of power as a macro that just a finger is an existential threat is too good, plus, it helps that Teasle draws really appealing hands 👀💛
