To me, it's also very compelling that Balin and Dwalin both took part in Thráin's quest for Erebor, and were present when Thráin vanished in Mirkwood. Now they are making the same journey with his son, while poor Thorin has to come to terms with the truth of his father's fate.

My experience of reading the sagas was seeing these pages, getting my Tolkien-fan mind blown, and then not really managing to get much further than that.
