c.1774-vintage original and now truncated line of the Oxford Canal disappears under an iron bridge built c.1834, when the canal here was straightened to better compete with the Grand Union for Midlands–London traffic.

A7 #ParkChat I'm going to respectfully decline answering the campground question. It's too difficult to get good campsites these days.

Hiking? There are sections on the C&O Canal Towpath west of Sharpsburg that are just empty. From Hancock to the Round Top Cement Factory, I encountered no one.
The kilns of the Round Top Cement Factory. It takes about an hour to hike up the C&O towpath here from Hancock.

Stuff of this mornings walk.

Loved this morning’s Women’s Breeze Ride - a relaxed 8 miles along the Worcs & Bham Canal towpath, the A38 cycleway, and the beautiful Rea Valley.

So good to see the green spaces full of life - cyclists, walkers, even kayakers! 🚴‍♀️🛶

I'll start by saying I'm a runner myself, but when you're running in a group - say a towpath - actually you're a bunch of rude and inconsiderate dicks if run at people and don't give others space. I'm OK I'll call you a c*nt but the elderly lady walking her dog didn't need that at 730 in the morning

On this day in 2017, I was at a conference in Manchester and as I had time, walked there from Piccadilly along the Rochdale Canal. (I found myself passing the site of the legendary Haçienda, now gone.) All utterly transformed since I mooched around there in a trench-coat in the early 1980s.
A canal, winding between tall modern blocks of flats whose balconies overlook the water. A steep cobbled path (in fact the towpath of a canal rising up at the foot of a lock) with a modern red-brick building to the right; part of the lower floor is made up of steel bars against which are set steel shapes with curving edges and writing on them (in letters too small to read). A steel gate with sections cut out of it and lettering stamped into it, in minimalist type, reading '"Now that's finished. You won't see the haçienda. It doesn't exist. The haçienda must be built." Ivan Chtcheglov 1953'. A steel fence, made of solid sections with curving edges set against sections of steel bars. On one of the solid sections is a stencil-style image of the Manchester cultural provocateur and journalist Tony Wilson.

The work to the canal is clearly necessary and Canal & River Trust wouldn’t so solidly block the towpath unless they needed to.

But in the publicity of such a major inconvenience and provision of a diversion route that is in any way suitable, the councils and CRT have massively failed us.

Quite pleased with my 10 miles this morning. Quiet alongside the canal, several runners out on other parts of the route.

A perfect autumnal Peak District plod today from the lovely old town of Marple, finishing with possibly the best leek, cheese and potato pie ever created at Tawny Stores.

⛔️ Peak Forest Canal towpath completely blocked at Turf Lea/Strines for major works. Solid metal fence going up now. No good route Marple-Disley.

Preferable to a collapsed canal but an *unbelievably* inconvenient stretch to close with seemingly little publicity or thought to cycle & wheel diversion.
A line spray painted across a canal towpath where a solid metal fence was about to be installed into the ground, completely blocking the route. A huge temporary stone haul road across a field beside a canal, for works to repair a culvert. A digger operates on the off side of the canal, where a culvert requires major works. The path pictured will be completely inaccessible until at least Christmas, possibly beyond. Closure notices and diversion map at the site, stating a statutory six month closure. The diversion map does not note the multiple obstacles of barriers, steps and stiles on the posted diversion, which is only suitable for pedestrians despite the canal also being advertised as a wheeling and cycling route.

IWA are on the nail with this. Also, anecdote not data but on the Bridgewater and the Ashton Canals - maintenance done in a way that allowed insects and flowering plants (including orchids) to thrive - in the centre of one of the UK's big cities this was good to see.

Happy Halloween! 👻🎃🦇

It's a dark, sinister day here. My pet monster and I were out at 3:30 stalking the towpath.

Soon we shall emerge once more and makeour way through the village, amongst the living, to the post office. This time though, I will look less horrifying, as I'll have put my face on. 🧛🏻‍♀️
