President of the Mexican Senate,
"We'll build the wall and pay for it.
But we'll do it according to the 1830 map of Mexico... Mexicans were settled in these territories before the U.S. The Mexicans living there are in what has always been their homeland."

Exactly.

I would take it back to the

#TreatyOfGuadalupeHidalgo

and how the US failed to meet its obligations under the treaty.

A cynical American war of conquest against #Mexico ended on #ThisDayInHistory in 1848 with the signing of the #TreatyOfGuadalupeHidalgo. To end the unprovoked aggression of the #MexicanAmericanWar, our southern neighbour had to cede 55% of its territory to feed #ManifestDestiny.

I'm in California, immigration has always seemed the source of our strength. It is great that people want to come here.

I also like to point people at the #TreatyOfGuadalupeHidalgo to remind people how the borders moved.

#OTD The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1846–1848) ended the Mexican-American War. Mexico ceded 55% of its territory, including present-day California, Nevada, and Utah, to the U.S. in exchange for $15 million. It established the Rio Grande as the border.

Honestly, I find myself reminding people of the #TreatyOfGuadalupeHidalgo all the time, but it is famous for taking people's lands, and then denying them their rights as citizens, not for giving people land.

By the #TreatyofGuadalupeHidalgo (2 February 1848), #Mexico was forced to cede 40 percent of its territory to the United States. #Quite a coup, one might say. #DarkAgesAmerica #morrisberman

The treaty reshaped borders, citizenship, and political power in ways that continue to shape life in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands today.

Very true. I would also mention violating treaties with Mexico, like not honoring property rights after the #TreatyOfGuadalupeHidalgo
