Caught between joy at the high quality scientific investigation and sadness at the benthic devastation that's unfolded over on the North American Atlantic coast. Sometimes I wish ecological theory was just theory. #trophiccascade #regimeshift

Unmasking the Sea Star Killer
After a decade of carnage, we finally know what’s devastating sea stars along North America’s West Coast. Does that mean scientists can save them?

Restoring the balance of nature to #Yellowstone's #ecosystem was achieved by reintroducing #graywolves to the region. Just think how robust this locale would be if the wolves had never been eliminated in the first place!

The reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone triggered a "trophic cascade," leading to increased vegetation, beaver populations, and the return of songbirds, according to scholars of national parks. buff.ly/W85sSqJ By Sarah Diaz and Linda Lane, Coastal Carolina University

The new (to me) information is the strong #citsci component of this research; part of the data came from an #ecotourism operator with detailed daily records of customer otter observations going back 15 years.
The trophic Cascade with sea otters protecting kelp forest is well known. In February 2024, we heard about them also protecting salt marshes by eating invasive green crabs. Now, we have further coverage, w/ more info about one of the scientists who discovered this

Research done by Brent Hughes, a Sonoma State University professor, shows that sea otters help restore seagrasses and balance ecosystems.

Further coverage of #graywhales moving further from the $Oregon coast. Why? A #trophiccascade that means there's less zooplankton to eat

Excess urchins = less kelp
Less kelp = less plankton
Whales go where the food is

Without keystone predators like sea otters & sunflowers stars, sea urchins can destroy kelp forests. New study suggests this reduces zoplankton that live in kelp, an important food for gray whales.
