How do YOU support the hobby?
I feel guilty (well as guilty as someone with my degree of apparent but undiagnosed neurodivergence can) that I seem to be a natural miser and don’t spend a lot of money supporting people in the hobby.
Ever since my entry into it was delayed….

You got any weaknesses as a TTRPG Referee?
Unusually last weekend at the Furnace convention - and I’m sitting here now feeling withdrawal from not having had a con THIS weekend - I PLAYED all weekend.
During my last game, I was in the queue for coffee during a break….

Or would anyone benefit from hearing my thoughts, plans (struggles) etc? Or am I over-sharing on here?
I couldn’t fit it in as part of my #TTRPGTHOUGHTS because I’ve got a long enough list of those as is. Player/Referee/Designer. I don’t want my con addiction wiping out my thoughts on those. 5/x

The use of “fun” props in TTRPGS. Yes, No or “it depends”.
When I was growing up & my family knew I was into Marvel comics the bought me a Hulk Pop-up Book as a present and seriously thought I’d be happy. Simultaneously showing me that they completely misunderstood my hobby…

For “reasons” I wasn’t Refereeing. (I was lucky to be there at all). So I got to play 5 radically different games one after the other and its spurned a list of #TTRPGTHOUGHTS which you lot will have to suffer for the next week or so.
In my second game I sat across from @omnihedron.co.uk.

Core to the Motif approach is dice labels (or "flavors" in Motif-speak). It's really one of my favorite things! (And I love seeing other designers use dice labels.) Each die is a unique factor. Explore these #TTRPGThoughts with me!

The whole point of abstruse dice mechanics is to disguise the odds from players.
Unless you have ulterior motives, the vast majority of TTRPGs have some kind of randomiser to decide if characters succeed or fail at the tasks they’re attempting.

Should I offer to Referee TTRPGs that I haven’t written, don’t regularly play and am not an expert in in public spaces?
Note - that double “in” is grammatically correct IMHO.
I’m about to go out (more dental work -stay off the biscuits, kids!) so this thread…

What’s one mechanic or design choice that immediately hooks you into a game? Is it clever dice mechanics, narrative freedom, or maybe unique player roles?
Share your favorites and let’s spark some midweek inspiration!

Character generation at the convention table. Yes or No?
The perceived wisdom is that at cons you present players with a choice of pregenerated characters to play. Many con websites even state this in their advice section. Reasons?
A. So you can get playing straight away.

Ideas for a long slot Convention game.
I’ve got a quirky con coming up. Weekend. Friday to Sunday.
But 2 x 5 hr slots on the full day (Saturday) rather than the usual 3 x 4ish hours.
Organised by wonderful people but it’s one of those “if you know you know” type ones.

Love how rules shape the feel of a game! Percentile has a high stakes vibe, while every die you roll adds to the drama for dice pools. Other systems spark their own vibes. What’s a mechanic that perfectly captures the spirit of its game for you?

How about a “request” convention?
With all these people publishing lists of TTRPGs they want to try out - I though “Why not have a convention where people submit requests for games and Referees offer to run games to meet the demand?”

People can go a bit mad when you take the brakes off.
Broadly, in my head, a division that can apply to some TTRPGS is that some ENABLE you to emulate a specific genre or tone and others ALLOW you role-play in an open and flexible way.

Random thoughts on 2 or 3 different Conventions
I’m off to #OBaWS. The Owl Bear and the Wizards Staff convention in Leamington Spa.
An Auteur event. ONE MAN decides he wants a TTRPG games day, sorts a venue out, invites people and ORGANISES it.
Because he works hard…

Wny are there so many “new” TTRPGs coming out all the time? Surely the perfect one has been invented by now.
It’s called The Hawthorne Effect. Experiments to find the perfect office environment discovered that there was no single perfect office set up.

My journey to tabletop Scotland.
You’re going to get posts about my travels North of the border today.
At the moment, I’m in a bus into Birmingham. It’s 5:30. I was going to get up at 5am but my wife kindly woke me at 4:30.
So supportive.
