The first time Jeongin makes it rain, he doesn't realize it's him. It's his fifth birthday and his older brother had run off with the two friends their mother had allowed him to invite, and his baby brother had cried when he realized that he wasn't going to be able to open any of Jeongin's birthday presents. Jeongin, at his big old age of five years old, has realized that this is what this life is going to be from now on: his big brother ignoring him for friends his own age, and his baby brother drawing all the attention just because he's the baby. He's upset, but more than that, he's sad. It isn't fair, but what can Jeongin do about it? He's five; he can't throw a temper tantrum to get his way. He's too old for that. The clouds pour in so fast that no one has a chance to grab the presents or cover the cake before the rain comes down. His parents end up taking the whole group of kids out for bungeoppang and yuja-cha, fretting over late winter colds. The outdoor party had been Jeongin's idea. It isn't for another fifteen years that he realizes the rain was because of him, too. He'll never tell anyone, but Chan is Jeongin's favorite roommate. Chan steps in to take care of all the little annoyances that Jeongin never realized bothered him, from scheduling things to organizing the pantry to sorting through their laundry and making sure the right pieces always go to the dry cleaners. In return, Jeongin does his best to give as much as he takes. He wakes ten minutes before Chan's alarms so he can pull him out of sleep as gently as possible. He checks on him when Chan hits a stride in his home studio, switching out old water bottles with fresh ones, cutting up the fruit that Chan's bought and leaving it at his elbow, just like his mom used to. From home to rehearsal to various performance venues, Chan looks at him with bright, happy eyes, like Jeongin is his greatest dream come true, and Jeongin will do anything to make sure that never stops. Anything but this. Jeongin takes one step back, then another. Backs away until he bumps into the couch and almost falls to the ground, just barely catching himself on the arm. "Is that..." Chan clears his throat, glances behind Jeongin to the front door, "is that really what you think of me?" Jeongin can't speak. No, it's not. Yes, it is. He loves Chan and but he ne makes Jeongin crazy, makes Jeongin want to scream and tie him to a bed so Jeongin can make sure he's eating and sleeping and being taken care of. But no, because that's a crazy thought, and Jeongin loves being taken care of Chan, too. Loves that Chan will stay later at dinner when Jeongin's drunk too much, sipping on a glass of water. Loves that Chan will eat whatever Jeongin puts in front of him, even after Jeongin snuck in more gochugaru than he knows Chan can handle. Loves that Chan had simply laughed it off, even as he sweat and cried through the heat. Chan blinks, shakes his head like he does when he's trying not to cry. He brings his fists to his eyes, knuckling at them harshly. Jeongin's heart is breaking, and he still can't speak, can't even swallow against lump in his throat for making his hyung, his roommate, his partner in so many things, cry. He has to get out of here. He has to, before he brings a storm upon what has been a beautiful, clear night. Clear enough that you could see the stars, if they lived anywhere else but the center of the city. He pushes himself off the couch, distracted when he sees the water slide of his hand. When he goes to wipe his face, hoping to catch his tears before they fall, he's interrupted by Chan's voice yet again. "Jeongin?" He can't look at Chan, he can't. But there's something in his voice. Like the hurt, the betrayal, the sadness, have all dropped away. There's something else there now. Something that sounds strangely like wonder. Jeongin blinks as more water comes down, enough that he knows its not his tears, enough that it slicks his hair down against his skull. He knows he looks unfortunately round, like he took a jump into a pool with all his clothes on. He knows the water sloshing around his feet means that they'll have to get a special vacuum in here soon, unless they want to flood their downstairs neighbor. He knows all of this, but he can't focus on any of that. Not when he finally raises his eyes to lock on to Chan's. Chan's eyes are bright and shining. Pearls in the sea, rain drops catching the sunlight. The water falling around Jeongin slows, stops. He isn't sad any more.

Marshalling at Catford #parkrun this morning as doing the Cancer Research Winter Run tomorrow. After heavy rain it was really muddy and I was at the muddiest point - Police Van Corner. Lots of shouting of encouragement and checking on sliding runners- a lovely morning. #RunningPunks #GreenRunners

AN UPDATE ON OUR STAFF For several years now, we have watched our industry undergo significant change. So many of our friends and colleagues who work in game development have suffered a series of painful adjustments. We've seen talented people lose their jobs. Inspiring companies have closed their doors. Our own game, Rumbleverse, was met with a premature sunset. All the while at Iron Galaxy, we've been making sacrifices to keep our teams intact. It has been our hope that we could emerge from this long winter alongside all the teammates who have come to work with us over the years. Today, we're making the unfortunate announcement that we have run out of room to maneuver amidst this slow recovery. Today, Iron Galaxy is parting ways with some of our developers and support staff. In total, we have reduced our employee base by 66 people. This was a means of last resort for us. It's a measure we do not take lightly to enable our long-term survival. Iron Galaxy is still committed to serving our partners in the creation of games. Our capabilities remain intact to work with the best companies in the world on the most beloved player experiences. This year, we'll continue to explore new ways to support an industry we love and keep working towards its ongoing recovery. At this moment, our focus is on our teammates who have begun a journey toward their next role. We thank them for working with us. We'll be doing everything we can to support them in the search for the next phase of their careers. Keep an eye out for them if you need good people. We are sorry to see them go.

It's just another MANIC MONDAY, Bluetopia. I went for my run in 31° weather this morning. THAT was fun.

I don't do the Daily Run posts anymore, but sometimes I'll toss out a composite of some of the shots I take on those runs.

Me, backlit by the rising sun; giant black sunglasses in the style of Jackie O, long ash blonde hair spilling out of my double hoodies. Looking PRETTY damned glamorous for someone about to run 3.5 miles in an hour. Fear not - I do not look this fabulous for long. Though it be 31°, the sun beating down on me soon has me hot & sweaty, & running laps around my favourite field does me no favours, either. Unless, of course, we're talking about that of the cardiovascular variety - or even merely one of the physique. I love that field; I can run around it for an hour without thinking, look at my Health app & find I've run 3.5 miles. Then it's half a mile home. Today I cut it a bit short, so my total was 3.5 miles in an hour, which is still pretty fucking fantastic when you consider I couldn't walk farther than down my block in 15 minutes 21 months ago. (Can you spot the OCD in me? Numbers numbers numbers. Exercise is RIFE with fodder for my obsessive-compulsive behaviours. Benign, until not.) Here's my field - or part of it. To the right is a copse of still mostly-naked trees, the rising run shining in the brilliant blue sky through it. In the distance, ANOTHER field, with a basin in the middle, where kids go sledding in the snowy winter months, and which fills with water in the rainy season. I find it's often muddy & soggy. MY field is hilly - which gives me several challenges as I run, no flat sameness like a track. I have to pay SOME attention to what I'm doing, but I can still zone out a bit & listen to music or carry on a phone conversation with a running partner (I have a couple of those). This winter the field was only covered with too much snow to run on for a few weeks, which is kind of appalling, from a "what the fuck is happening to our climate" standpoint - but admittedly kind of great from a "the weather didn't suck much for runners" standpoint. Even last year I had to slog through a few horrid blizzard-condition weeks. Not this year; two minor blizzards, tops. This is a shot of the bare woods to the left of the path I take homeward once I leave my field. Just to the right, mostly out of frame, is a row of evergreens that lines the path on its right - they're what lines one side of the field. The sky is RIDICULOUSLY blue - especially considering how freaking COLD it is. Oh, PLEASE let this fucking winter end. For a season that brought precious little SNOW, the COLD has lasted FAR too fucking long, goddamnit. It is APRIL 1st, it is 31°, and the Farmers Almanac promises that the entire goddamned month will CONTINUE to to be unseasonably fucking cold. Though what the fuck "unseasonably" even MEANS anymore is beyond me. Go ahead, right wing fuckwits, please tell me how it's not caused by human behaviour. Never mind. I've lost hope. None of the entities that would have to change IMMEDIATELY for us to have a PRAYER of avoiding all-out catastrophe have any intention of doing so. We're so fucked. I just hope my son & I are dead before WATERMAGEDDON. Me last week, 26 March, on a FABULOUS day of 47°, comparatively BALMY, wearing my favourite black beanie, looking smug. The next day I had a date in Chicago, which was fabulous. I hadn't been back to Chicago since I had my last drink there/got sober on November 21/22, 1996... It was nice being there completely sober, with no baggage. Went home the next day. I hadn't flown commercial in over 15 years; I must say, I did not miss it. O'Hare has changed a bit - as has the G Concourse. Wow. Used to be Siberia, now there are shops and restaurants and everything! Got my heart broken on Friday. It's complicated. Isn't everything? The only simple thing in my life is the mess. The MESS, I can easily & simply break down. The MESS could be easily & simply despatched, with the right weapons. I don't HAVE the right weapons, but that's beside the point. The REST of it... is complicated. So, I have a broken heart, but it's already mending; I'm an old hand at quick recoveries. No time for wallowing.😎
