The news I know the whole world is waiting for -- Day 9 -- Beverley Town Documents, AGREEMENT BETWEEN EDWARD LEE, ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, LORD OF BEVERLEY, AND THE BURGESSES OF BEVERLEY, 69 (1536), The Publications of the Selden Society, Vol XIV (1900) -- a prohibition on going armed to elections.
And for the more worship of the said election every alderman and every other person, of every of the occupations of the said town, shall, at the time of the said election, come unto the said place accustomed therefore, in the clothing of their craft, or other of their best array; and that no person, upon payne of twenty shillings to be levied and taken of his goods and chattels by the said xii Governors to those of the said town, within iii days after every of the said elections do come or enter into the common place of election of the said town called thanshouse, or the court or garthe(?) of the same house, at the time of the election of the said Governors, with any sword, dagger, woodknife or any other weapon defensive or invasive; and also, if any person or persons offending or doing contrary to the ordinance aforesaid, do refuse to pay the said sum of 20 shillings, forfeited as aforesaid, within 3 days next after the said election, or have secured, procured or moved any business or disturbance in any election against the good order, peace or tranquility of the said town, or hereafter do attempt any thing contrary to this good order or agreement ; or be disobedient and not agreeable to such good orders and ordinances as is made for the good rule and quietness of the said town, or be become a maintainer of quarrels or a sow of dissension or discord within the said town, and so proved and tried before the 12 Governors of the said town for the time being, he shall forfeit and lose his burgage without hope of restitution for the same forever.
