Waren kurz ims Woolworth. Hab mich dort in 1 Teddywärmfläsch verliebt und die liebe Verkäuferin an der Kasse hat mir dann die Schere gereicht "…damit ich ihn sofort vom Etikett befreien kann um mit ihm zu kuscheln" 😭🫶🏻

Bin dann mit "🧸" durch die Hood gesteppt und jetzt chillen wir im Steinleädchen.

Created our first test zine today about Pauli Murray for our Quarry Street Free Little Library zine series. Looking forward to cranking out some more over the next few months.

She was the fourth of six children. Her mother, Agnes, was a nurse. Her father, Will, was a college-educated high school teacher. When Pauli was three her mother died suddenly. Her father suffered from depression and divided his children among relatives. Pauli was sent to live in Durham, North Carolina, with her Aunt Pauline. Pauli’s understanding of race was informed by her family’s mixed heritage. Several of Pauli’s ancestors were the children born out of sexual violence between white slave owners and enslaved Black women. Pauli described her family as a “mini-United Nations,” with varying shades of skin color. Life in segregated Durham presented the world as white versus Black, but Pauli’s own heritage defied that division Seventeen years before the Woolworth lunch counter sit-ins, Pauli Murray helped organize a sit-in that desegregated a restaurant in Washington, DC. Fifteen years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat, Pauli Murray was arrested when she wouldn’t move to the back of a Durham, North Carolina, bus. Ten years before Brown vs. the Board of Education, Pauli Murray advocated a legal argument that “separate but equal” is unconstitutional. And decades before the term “intersectionality” was coined, Pauli Murray was grappling with gender identity, sexuality and race. In 1966, Murray was one of the twelve founders of the National Organization for Women (NOW). But after feeling NOW sidelined women of color, Murray left the organization and joined the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In 1968, Murray received a tenure-track job teaching American Studies at Brandeis University, but left in 1973 to break one more barrier. In 1977, Murray became the first African American woman in the United States to become an Episcopal priest. Grew up in the 60’s in Albany. El Cerrito Plaza where we shopped and got food at Woolworth. Also Doggie Diner! Later at Cal it was the Old West Gun Room. I hope that building hasn’t been torn down.

I don't think we knew it at the time but Woolworth marked a significant social era in American history. I think there are more common threads there than either of us can imagine and lots and lots of similar experiences.
