I love the trend emerging in LitRPG and Progression Fantasy where the main character is accompanied by a companion.

Dark Matter Ascension has Ollie the Wayfinder (cute otter!) and Last Lord of the Fey (Feb. 17th Royal Road launch) has Felicity (a fairy dragon!).
