text reading: Ridani's hand is on the deadbolt when she realises suddenly that this might be her chance. Maybe something in her parents' notes can help Salidyn. Surely they took notes, they were scientists after all. She runs back down the stairs, habitually avoiding the creaky one, and begins rifling through drawers. Many of them contain other instruments, smaller than the ones on the table. She can't look at these too long without unpacking memories she's spent years carefully burying, so she closes these drawers quickly. But other drawers contain papers. The first few pages she finds are useless— mostly her father's early work, meaningless theories on the influences of the Far Realms that he disproved early in his career— but she stops when she encounters a folder with her name on it. Ridani spoke with her father recently. She knows that this folder can't tell her anything she doesn't already know. But she feels a cruel spark of hope nonetheless. Hands shaking, she opens it. Her stomach drops.

I have allied myself with those who oppressed my family and I killed my own stepfather. I have turned my back on my own former people and committed acts of brutality to secure my position. I have manipulated those who trusted me, until that trust was gone, and when I left I trained insurgents to fight against those I once served. I have twisted my soul into a pretzel so many times that I no longer see where it began. All this I have done to find one person, whom I love more that my own precious threads of life, for whom I would go to the ends of the earth. You may refuse me, but even in death I will not stop searching.” The Reaper was silent. Around them, people walked back and forth, unseeing, unhearing. Nobody could see It but Heart. The depths of his hooded sweatshirt were black, shadow within a shadow. “You have no fear Jonathan Heart.” It said after a time. “I bled my fear and my shame away years ago,” Heart answered. “Every last drop.”

The floor opened up, swallowing both the Nephilim and Sonny. Orange light emitted from the hole, and just as quickly as it appeared, it vanished. "SONNY!" I fell to my knees and clawed at the tile he had just fallen through. A second later, another portal opened overhead and Sonny fell crashing to the ground. He was groaning, and his clothes were darkened by soot. Maya and I crowded around him. "What happened?" She asked. "You didn't actually drop that thing into a volcano, did you?" "No." he coughed.
