Hello new not-cloud-connected thermostat. Welcome to replacing my nest that will become useless in six days. Not doing that again.

(This one is zwave; I'd prefer zigbee but this seems popular and well supported by home assistant).

Got used for $56, get a $50 rebate from electric company, not bad

There's a newer generation of Internet of Things devices that are simply "network of things."

Items based around protocols like Zigbee and Matter can be isolated from the internet and only respond to local controls, like Home Assistant.

It's what the ecosystem should have been from the start.
I don't trust when very basic things "need internet" to work.

No, let me use my home wifi only. There is no reason why a light bulb needs Internet access.

I went as far as looking into infrared, uh, boosters, I guess you'd call it, just so I could control all bulbs with one controller vs the net.

I finally automated a bunch of things in our house based on Matter, Zigbee and Home Assistant.

I can even go to the router and tell it not to let any of the devices talk to the larger internet, and it works like a charm.

It's what happens when the hype bubble freaks get out of the way of tech.

Local control everything! Hubitat elevation hub and Philips hue are two great options with local control. Standard z wave and zigbee devices that need no cloud services to function!

Sorry you’ve touched a nerve with me😅

I'll likely use this mostly with Google Assistant, as I have a bunch of Google devices (presumably listening intently to all the songs I sing to cats about cats), and what prompted this was wanting to replace some fugly ceiling lights and the ones I like use ZigBee.

I've finally given up on Z-Wave smart bulbs making a comeback and now I have to migrate everything to zigbee, or rather get enough devices for the mesh to function hopefully without killing the dependent z wave devices I have left.

That's a fancy dashboard! Loads tidier than mine 😂 I only needed the window sensors adding (the rest of the house is proprietary stuff piped into HA), and the HA Pi is in the basement so would need a fair bit of kit for the Zigbee to reach the rest of the house. Matter seemed easy/cheap for that

The second fib about wireless camera was also from the patent: “Communication unit may be connected to camera through a wired or wireless connection”

Anyone reading Nintendo patents regularly knows that the first example given (“wired”) is usually real, and the rest (“wireless”) are just ideas.

I just got myself a @home-assistant.io Home Assistant Green smart home hub! I've been running 'HA' with a SonOff Zigbee dongle on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ for several years now and have plenty of Zigbee Smart Home devices. It was definitely time for an upgrade!

Gestern „aus Spass“ auf einem Mini PC Proxmox installiert. Eben darauf einen Home Assistant Server installiert und den Zigbee Stick eingebunden. Nachhher mal sehen, was so alles an Geräten erkannt wird. Die Waschmaschine hat HA schon in der Konfiguration. Was man so am Wochenende macht.

my entire zigbee network randomly killed itself today while just idleing and this might just push me to finally get a new coordinator and rebuild it from the ground up :|

I'm happy said energy monitor is a Zigbee powered smart switch, so I can cut all electricity to the entertainment system and make sure it can't draw power anymore.

home automation tech is great because you can just say "SONOFF dongle max zigbee PoE Dongle" and people will think your having a stroke

Time to butcher some Hue-compatible smart Zigbee lighting (and hopefully learn something along the way).

Periodic call for volunteers: we've got a deep slate of Bluetooth classes on the horizon, but we need classes on other wireless protocols. If you'd be interested in teaching a class on satellite, cell, WiFi, Zigbee, LoRa, Thread, etc, let us know at teach🌀ost2.fyi
