Winter is coming. The frost was so thick this morning shouts of "SNOW!!" from a very excited child echoed in my home ❄️ and my last remaining coneflower bloom has officially turned into an ice princess.

Packing and labeling soil samples from my raised veggie beds and and in-ground beds around the yard today so I can understand what’s good and what could use improvement. I’ll get access to online results in a few weeks.

Ayocote Morado finally starting to emerge as the other pole beans are dying back.
Last year I had a bunch of the plants hanging to dry in my basement because frost came before they were ready.

Planted ~50 garlic cloves and ~50 red and yellow over-winter onions today. Whew!
First time trying onions this way, so I’m excited to see what happens.
And even though I harvested a nice-sized bag of mixed greens, I’m gonna go eat an enormous cheeseburger.

Homemade pepper jam time! Used the remaining hot peppers from the garden, store-bought bell peppers, used just apple cider with no added water, and the low sugar pectin. And just before this week’s freeze warnings! 🌱🫑🌶️
Tart and spicy, just like me!

If the mild weather holds 2-3 more weeks, I might get one more pepper harvest like this morning's. 🌱 #vegetablegardening

It’s harvest time! Used veggies fresh from the garden for a while, time to harvest and preserve. Bags of tomatoes in the freezer for sauce and jalapeño jam from the peppers. I’ll need to buy bell peppers since critters ate those plants. 🌱

Josh the cat has been my study buddy for the Foundations of Gardening course.
He sits next to me while I read and listens in to the webinar classes, too.

Transitional time in the garden. Shelling peas are coming. But so are a few sweet repeat raspberries & ever-bearing strawberries. Amish Paste finally ripening indoors! Onions & shallots are done curing outside; what we haven’t eaten yet moves to the basement.

Fall planning outside today. Filling up the raised beds with greens, beets, carrots, peas, and radishes.
Inside, I shelled some beans and packed up some dried herbs.

Nice Sunday harvest. The last of the green beans (I took them out to make room for more fall planting); the first of the fall-planted radishes, and two disappointing but cute sweet peppers. Plus various tomatoes and a good clump of greens.

The cucumber succumbed to the cooler night temps, so I made one more jar of quick pickles with what’s left. Some tiny guys I just halved and tossed in with the rest of the slices, so we’ll see what becomes of them.

The 6th bed is all garlic, but will have other things eventually. For today I got it fertilized and a cozy straw blanket. My husband set up the two trellises so I can grow more tomatoes and squash on the south side of the house.
