#zpool
i have a cron that runs a script every couple hours like

POOL_STATUS="$(zpool status -x)"

if [[ "$POOL_STATUS" != "all pools are healthy" ]]; then
send-me-a-push-notification "[this machine's] zpools unhealthy:

FreeBSDのZFSは使い方にもよるみたいだけど、ちょいちょいチェックやら同期やらメタデータの書き込みやらしているみたいなのでHDDはスピンダウンしない方がいいみたい。サーバーだしな、まあそうだよな。それならそれでサーバー用のHDDがほしいところだけど。SSDはSSDで寿命が気になるけど、それはそれでDRAM付きのSSDで”zpool set autotrim=on poolname”とすればよいのだとか。

@Anarcat One approach for 'zpool create' is to use '-o grub2' or the like, which is not well documented but which rolls up all of the compatibility settings to something the ZFS project theoretically has checked.

(You can see what they all are in usr/share/zfs/compatibility.d (probably, check […]

Oh these are really good
I love ZPool

I also need to figure out how to mount a zpool on uCore. The ZFS module will be loaded, detect the zpool, and attempt to mount it at /naspool. Only the root filesystem is read-only on uCore, so that gonna be a problem. There is some documentation on the Bluebuild site on how to work around this.

the one time that all the training data being poisoned with subtle ways to brick your zpool is a value add and not the cause of a 2 am panic attack

how. it scrubbed clean on 2026-01-11 💀

ZFS does both:

zpool create mypool mirror /dev/disk1 /dev/disk2

And then you can create separate datasets (like folders, but they can have different options like compression, automatic snapshots, etc.)

zfs create mypool/dataset1
zfs create mypool/dataset2

Silent data corruption is one of the most dangerous storage failures. ZFS scrubs verify every block, detect checksum errors, and repair data before damage accumulates. Learn how scrubs work, and how to read zpool status results.

I like CLIs with good mouthfeel. `zfs`/`zpool` has good mouthfeel. `podman` has good mouthfeel. y'know?

Erm, why is my ZFS zpool so full?

Oh right! I keep an offline-backup of my entire game collection of gog.com games, that I bought 😅

But I really should exclude them from my backup jobs 😆

Looking to spot storage bottlenecks in real time?
zpool iostat 1 gives you a live, second-by-second view of IOPS and bandwidth across your pools.
A simple command that delivers deep visibility into ZFS performance.

Since I somehow needed to figure this out three times in the last month and there are no search engines left on the internet, note to self i guess:

# imports pool without mounting anything
(initramfs) zpool import -N poolname
# mount the root fs at /root
(initramfs) mount -o […]

I am learning to love the hetzner rescue system.

I messed up my pf.conf and locked myself out. Booted into the rescue system, compiled zfs, mounted the zpool, fixed the config, rebooted and I'm back in!

gotta nuke some old SAS drives that were sold to us as new-old-stock but turned out to be badly refurbished, so we `zpool offline`'d the topmost disk in the rack, `camcontrol stop`'d it, swapped in the old one, and `camcontrol format` is now running. woooo

guy on the frebesd forums complaining about how his 11 year old laptop gets unusable when they rsync files onto their zpool and extrapolates this to "is that all it takes to bring a freebsd server to its knees" and like, no, bro, writing to a full spinning rust pool with copies=2 is going to […]

They're basically all I use for big home pools, just check the smart stats and make sure things aren't too ugly. If you want to be really cautious could make a zpool with raidz2(s) instead

Do you ever fuck up a ctrl+r and just yeet an entire drive from your zpool in the process? Yeah, me neither
