New publication! Gammal et al. sampled benthic macrofauna, solute fluxes and environmental variables at 3 shallow habitats throughout one year.
Results show that the strength of biodiversity-function relationships really depends on which species are present in which habitat and during which season.
Seasonal Variation in the Role of Benthic Macrofauna Communities for Ecosystem Functioning in Shallow Coastal Soft-Sediment Habitats - Estuaries and Coasts
Coastal zones include a variety of habitats and numerous biodiversity components, which provide essential ecosystem functions and services. In the wake of the escalating climate and biodiversity crise...

🚨 NEW paper alert!
#Seagrass #functional #traits act as predictors of #biomass, albeit moderately. Study conducted across 1500 km coastline.
Main #biodiversity mechanism driving seagrass #biomass stock is through dominance.

How often do we explore temporal context dependece in ecological pattern and process? Not nearly enough!
Coastal ecosystem functions depend on biodiversity—but temporal context shapes how benthic species influence solute fluxes, with effects varying by season, species & site. Timing is key!

You want to know about this site that lets you explore data collected by the HMS Challenger from 1872–1876, an expedition that laid the foundation of oceanography. 🌊

challenger-expeditio...
A map displaying various ocean regions related to the Challenger Expedition, with marked locations for stations across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Each region is labeled, noting the number of stations available for exploration. An inset map highlights a specific area in the North Atlantic.
