It’s utter nonsense, isn’t it? And yet they often won’t process an application without the accompanying references. The entire business drives me insane.
I wish academic life would rethink its reliance upon letters of reference. They’re extremely time-consuming to write and, almost by nature, given to exaggeration and half-truths. In my experience, they’re also often blithely disregarded by those making the decisions. A waste of everyone’s time.
