Today has been a long one. Nonetheless, I feel energised and humbled by the last meeting of today in which I joined the wonderful editorial team (and fellow editorial board members) of @abojournal.bsky.social for our annual meeting. ABO’s work and the work it supports are vital and outstanding!

Last night was the launch of Encounters with Jane Austen, a collection of essays, interviews, poems and short fiction about to commemorate the 250th anniversary of her birth. I wrote the book’s introduction to the book, which includes a short account of Austen’s life, work and legacies. #Austen250

It was so lovely to be at the launch of Jane Austen’s Fashion Bible by the incomparable Ros Ballaster at Chawton House last night. Always a pleasure to hear Ros talk about Austen and the book is sumptuous #JaneAusten #Austen250

A picture of me ( a woman with glasses and smile) holding a copy of a book entitled Encounters with Jane Austen beating a picture of Jane Austen sites on a pink backround Top paragraph of my introduction to the book featuring a long quotation from Northanger Abbey that criticises those who decry novels The title page of the book listing Jennie Batchelor as the author of the introduction and Cheryl Robson as compiled and editor

Today was the last session of the Jane Austen Book Club at Harewood House. led by @chloewigstonsmith.bsky.social and me to run alongside Austen and Turner: A Country House Encounter exhibition. Today, we spent a lot of time talking (amongst other things) about silence. #AustenandTurner #Austen250
A glass case in front of a fireplace. The case contains three volumes of the first edition of Mansfield Park. Above the case, hangs a banner with a quotation from Mansfield Park in which Fanny Price is recalled to have asked a question about the slave trade that is met with a dead silence.

I had the best morning ever earlier this week at the fabulous Quilt Museum in York conducting research for my book The Writer’s Craft. The collection is extraordinary and the generosity and expertise of Curator, Heather Audin, equal to it. #quilting #needlework #craft #writing #sewing #18c
Back of a hexagonal quilt (1820s) made of different coloured and plain cottons with some paper templates still attached.

The wonderfully accomplished @jenniebatchelor.bsky.social talks about needlework & embroidered accessories in #JaneAusten's life & novels. Loved it --- fascinating detail. Lots of things to learn/think about --- always wondered about stomachers, for instance.

Congrats to all receiving A-level results. We look forward to welcoming students in Sept. I joined York as Head of English in 2003 but was an undergrad here in the mid-1990s. As a 1st-gen Uni student, I had no idea what to expect. All I knew was books lit me up. Going to York changed my life. 1/

Totally missed #WorldEmbroideryDay due to busy-ness at work. Anyway, here’s two of the current projects. Trying #goldwork for the 1st time with Hand and Lock kit and working on recreating Jane Austen’s handkerchief for Cassandra.

TV adaptations of C18 and C19 novels which cast black actors, to the ire of certain newspapers, would not have been that surprising to contemporaries. (Thinking too of Thackeray’s Vanity Fair)

Thanks so much, Miranda. I how you get to see the exhibition, too. Would love your thoughts on it. And I am so looking forward to your book. It’s out soon isn’t it?
jenniebatchelor.bsky.social
Oh, sorry you miss it! The preparatory collages are awesome too, though. Really hope you liked the exhibition!
