Yeah, I didn't choose that. Working out kinks in our process apparently.

To celebrate both @younan.bsky.social's publication here and me crossing the 2k follower mark, let's have a thread about Narsai and some exciting new resources that have come out recently or are coming out soon.

Huge congratulations to @younan.bsky.social on the publication of this newly published translation of several sermons (mēmrē) of Narsai. I know from experience how tricky Narsai can be, but Andrew makes it look easy. I was honored to be among those who wrote a blurb for this important volume.
Cover of book image. Title: Narsai: Selected Sermons. Cover image is a colorful page from a Syriac manuscript with black and red ink and decorative cross at the top. Image of back cover of the same volume, with blurbs by James Walters, Sebastian Brock, and Aaron Butts.

I've joined the Substack revolution.

My first act as regent of patristics.substack is to dismantle the scholarly narrative that the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381 was a compromise with the Pneumatomachians/Macedonians.

The people asked. I delivered.🤣 patristics.substack.com/p/did-the-cr...

All faculty consultations about some new project are basically this: I don’t have a strong opinion, I support those who want to do it, I personally don’t want to be involved, and there’s no way I am leading it.

It's been about 15 since I've followed Evagrian scholarship closely, and this list inevitably reflects my own interests, but here it is:

Can you narrow down your interest? There are many ways of approaching Evagrius and the scholarship reflects this.

"'Do not despise' he took from common usage, some people being accustomed to say, I despised so-and-so, that is, I was pleased to see him struggling with problems." Theodoret of Cyrus, Commentary on Obadiah (trans. C. Hill, p. 131). So the ancients knew about schadenfreude.

I feel a hyphen joining old and ass would have been helpful. Now I am wondering what ass media is and how it becomes old.

Fascinating observation. And the Catholic tendency to elevate Mary to co-redemptrix is a kind of natural terminus of the Nicene impulse.

While at #NAPS2025 this week popped into the Art Institute to see the fascinating Torlonia Collection exhibit.
