I didn't say it was a character flaw. I think the old paradigm implies it is a character flaw (because obesity is seen to be within a person's control and therefore failure to do so is a moral failing); whereas the new paradigm shows that it's due an underlying medical issue.

I agree with this. I'm just saying: a lot of people going onto the drug are doing it for health purposes, not just aesthetics. It's a pretty powerful drug, and I do think it needs better regulating so that people on it are under the actual care of a doctor (not just accessing it online).

GLP1s are a paradigm shift in how we understand metabolic disorders. Many with obesity suffer from a hormonal imbalance. Once corrected, weight loss follows. It's a side effect of the body functioning properly. There are many health benefits that have nothing to do w/ aesthetics that come from this.
drlindseyfitz.bsky.social
I think we need to reframe how we discuss metabolic disorders as these drugs prove that many people with obesity suffer from a GLP1/GIP hormonal imbalance. I would also argue that people with weight issues often work hardest at exercise and diet, often with little long-term result.
drlindseyfitz.bsky.social
I agree that it's difficult to lose weight through exercise alone. But again, we've fallen into the trap of talking about weight gain as a symptom of a "bad diet." These drugs are proving that weight gain is often a symptom of a hormonal imbalance. Once that is corrected, the weight loss follows.
drlindseyfitz.bsky.social
Eating well & exercising are important. But for many, exercise is not an effective tool for weight loss. And diets rarely work longterm. This is the heart of the paradigm shift - many metabolic disorders are hormonal imbalances that can be corrected with medication. Tablets are on the horizon!
drlindseyfitz.bsky.social
This is a paradigm shift in how we understand metabolism. The metabolic disorder that leads to weight gain is caused by a hormonal imbalance. When you go off the drug, you revert back to your abnormal state. This is why many doctors are now recommending this as a longterm (or lifetime) medication.
drlindseyfitz.bsky.social
This is a paradigm shift in how we understand metabolism. People will cite regain after stopping a GLP1. But that’s the point. If the weight gain is due to a hormonal imbalance, that will not magically repair after stopping. For many, this will be a lifelong drug to correct a lifelong health issue.

Honestly I think some people are deeply wedded to toxic ideas around weight, eg that slim = virtuous, fat = lazy & ill-disciplined. These drugs are fundamentally threatening to that, because what they show is nope: it’s often hormonal, & almost anyone can lose weight if they just tweak that balance

Not gonna lie: I'm so stressed by the state of the world that my eye is twitching. Disasters are on my mind, so let me leave you with this...

The menu booklet for what would be the final lunch onboard the Titanic.

I finished and signed The Beatles. I just have to varnish them, then package them up for shipping to @quirkyfox.bsky.social gallery in N.Z.

Details on this quadriptych, and the exhibition in which it will appear, to follow in due course.

Re-posts appreciated!

The Devil’s Dance Floor
Late-Victorian London and the Last Bareknuckle Boys
SARAH ELIZABETH COX
An 1880s’ group biography of the last of Britain’s
bareknuckle boxers from the historical consultant behind
A Thousand Blows (Disney+/Hulu)
THE DEVIL’S DANCE FLOOR is the first popular book from Sarah Elizabeth Cox,
the historical consultant behind Steven Knight’s television series A Thousand Blows
and author of the historical blog ‘Grappling with History’.
A group biography of Victorian boxers, THE DEVIL’S DANCE FLOOR is a cultural
history that does far more than recount the true story behind the fictionalized
version now streaming. Taking a narrative approach, Cox charts the decline of
bareknuckle boxing over the 1880s, and, in doing so, explores subjects ranging
from policing and healthcare to the press and entertainment – all while offering a
personal-scale view of the melting point of Victorian London (think Hallie
Rubenhold’s The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper but
with a lot more getting punched in the face).
The subjects themselves hail from as far afield as London’s East End and the North
to the United States and the Caribbean. Each has a unique story to tell and reveals
something not only about our shared history but also about the world we live in
today.
Sarah Elizabeth Cox was a historical consultant on season one and two of Steven Knight's
1880s’ boxing and crime TV drama A Thousand Blows. She researches biographies of
Victorian and Edwardian boxers and wrestlers for her website ‘Grappling with History’ and
works as the British Science Association’… 1888 portrait of boxer Hezekiah Moscow, a slim Black or Black/East Asian mixed heritage man, taken by Harry Carpenter. He is shirtless, fists raised, wearing white tights and a chequered sash at the waist. There are painted palms on the studio backdrop.

I agree, although I should point out there were anti-vaxxers in the 19th century who burned effigies of Edward Jenner, so fears around vaccines have always existed.

This photo (c.1901) shows two boys exposed to smallpox. Only the boy on the right had been vaccinated.

Smallpox is one of the deadliest & most contagious diseases known to man. The virus killed over half a billion people in the 20th century—three times more than all that century’s wars combined.
A black and white photo of two boys. The boy on the left has a severe case of smallpox, with pustules all over his face and chest and arms. The boy on the right has no pustules.

I have paused, and am just imagining telling 1995 Me that President Donald Trump (yes, that Donald Trump) is preparing to invade Chicago with Texan troops in order to declare martial law.

It's not going well so far.
