With the weather warming up here in Queensland, it’s understandable that sometimes you might want to sleep with a leg out from under the blanket. 🐨🐨🌳🌳

Ok, anyone prepared to go out on a limb (pun intended) and guess which koala is male and which is female? Will disclose the signs in the comments a little later.

Most people that hit a koala on the road aren’t speeding, being careless or nasty people, they’ve simply experienced an unavoidable incident.
I’ve attended three vehicle strikes in the last week and in all instances the drivers involved called for help, giving the koalas a second chance. 🙏🙏🙏 🐨🐨🐨

A really important step forward in managing chlamydial disease in koalas. I’m extremely fortunate to be working at a University so heavily invested in koala conservation from various perspectives.

Koala chlamydia: Australia approves vaccine to curb killer epidemic
Thousands of koalas have died from the disease, with some estimates suggesting only 50,000 remain in the wild.

Checked up on two (now 3 😀) of our post release rehabilitated koalas on Sunday. Both females were treated for chlamydia infection but now back out doing what koalas do. 🐨🌳

Really interesting research in Victoria that highlights the risk sub clinical Chlamydia pecorum infections pose to southern koala populations.

What was once a poultry assocaited virus is now found in places far from poultry. Case report 10-20 dead walruses in Svalbard, Norway, with confirmation of HPAI H5N5. Virus similar to bird viruses from Norway/Europe

As if this week wasn’t concerning enough, a large section of the Thwaites Glacier broke off aswell. Maybe best to watch this one on Monday morning rather than wreck your weekend.

The footprint of the Grampians fire warning area is now huge. Hopefully the worst doesn’t eventuate as the westerly wind change comes through.

A horrible day for my friends and colleagues in Vanuatu, with a 7.3 magnitude earthquake striking 30kms from Port Vila. Our team about HELPR1 were straight into response mode in surrounding islands. Hoping to get in on Thursday with additional response personnel.

I spent today on Cape Otway visiting the koala population. This spot sparked my initial interest in koala ecology as a teenager. The population has its issues but its always a privilege being there.

Thanks @ecolsocaus.bsky.social for an outstanding week at #ESAu2024. The program was jam packed. Met some researchers I’ve admired for a long time and so impressed at the intelligence and passion of the huge number of early career ecologists present. See you next year. 🙏

Where do fires occur in Australia? I analysed NASA fire data for the last 23 years producing this map of frequency. Translating that into % burnt, SE +SW Aust make up less than 1%, 99.3% occurred across our desert, rangeland and tropical savannas.
