🏔️ Research from Scripps Oceanography scientist Lia Siegelman finds undersea "storms" are melting Antarctic glaciers from below. Researchers also identified a positive feedback loop in which ice shelf melting caused more ocean turbulence, which in turn caused more ice shelf melting.

It's a powerful feedback loop: more ice shelf melting changes salinities which generates more ocean turbulence, which in turn causes more melting — with major implications for ice shelf stability and global sea level rise. (arrow shows max melt ratio)

The Malthusian Trap: A Modern Framework for Population Growth and Climate-Induced Resource Scarcity
This paper revisits Thomas Malthus’ classical concept of the “Malthusian Trap” and updates it for the 21st century. It argues that climate change, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity are ...

Why microplastics should be routinely sampled by limnologists.

No environmental field survey that has searched for microplastics has yet failed to detect their presence. They are omnipresent in the water column, in the sediments, and in aquatic food webs.
