Batting to save the day - especially when it isn't your job - can be more exciting that smashing sixes all over the park. You don't get this kind of top shelf cricket in a T20 or 100 game.

I'm sure the NRL doesn't want guys who can help Leeds or St Helens or whomever beat their teams in the Club Challenge.

I must say, the last 10-15 years in sports has been quite frustrating. Money men, and in particular private equity vampires, get their teeth into everything and its "globalise", "expand the market", "next generation", replace 150-yeay old clubs with franchises!

When consolidation & care is needed.

Have you come across the Japanese "kotatsu"? It is essentially the same thing for humans (and pets) with room for eating/working/games on top!

The dust is yet to settle on yet another poorly scheduled English county season, but Shield action is back, and with Ashes selection on the line, there could be some absolutely cracking first class cricket to come.

Shane Lowry holing an eagle putt and shouting "fuck you" at the American crowd is the highlight of the Ryder Cup so far.

Even better than McIlroy telling to "shut the fuck up" earlier.

I know we live in a world filled with terrible people doing awful things but I still the worst are Americans shouting "get in the hole" at the Ryder Cup.

May your bowlers always smile at your wides and no balls, may your overs always count six.

Well lived, and you will be well remembered.

RIP Dicky Bird, one of the greats.

I feel exactly the same. It serves as a nice way to unwind and enjoy a couple of beers on a warm summer evening, but it is rarely memorable cricket.

List A and First Class is much better cricket. The Australian One-Day cup got underway this week with a cracking game:

It doesn't help that so many people involved in the administration of the game seem hell bent to expedite that outcome.

I can just about watch a T20 but it's just so often one-dimensional endless slogging, it is often just not very good cricket with little chance for bowlers, & rarely memorable.

Yes, I was thinking of union as well.

But also the general trend of financial irresponsibility across sports and how many hangers on, agents, consultants etc all take a piece here or there until suddenly the wodge is no more.

One of my great frustrations is the money men who have gotten hold of the game keep using the excuse "grow the next generation", especially in reference to the crisp comp, but neglect the fact a lot of people with money to spend, ie 30+ year olds still love longer format and want more red ball.

So, so very true. Scyld Berry's book Cricket is Life touches on that aspect.

The impetus to finally accept sponsorship from Benson & Hedges and add a one-day competition came from declining revenues at the end of the period.

My piece last year in County Cricket Matters about the evolution and continued mismanagement of white ball comps in this country showed the County Championship was only popular enough to make notable revenues during the golden era of the 1930s-60s—at one brief point, more popular even than football.

Of course it won't be though. It will be frittered away on "consultancy fees" and the like to companies owned by friends of owners and board members, the odd overseas player and maybe some token effort at grassroots.
