There’s a sort of Dunning-Kruger effect happening where people who read widely, consider various perspectives, and put in effort to understand views they disagree with worry that they don’t do that enough, while people who don’t do any of that accuse others of being in a bubble and call it a day.

There isn’t in this case, mostly because there’s no existing bike lane on OB Ave and the “connection” (especially on the west side) would be very tricky. Our AT plan calls for a proper bike lane on OB Ave, I very much hope that we will execute but pushback is guaranteed.

I told my mom on a regular basis when I was a kid that when I grew up I would reserve a room in my house as a ball room, yet somehow never followed through. Probably had something to do with the fact neither of my kids would go anywhere near one 😭

Fun fact: the lanterns used to use oil 100% distilled from Garry Oak acorns, but when the refinery moved up to Malcolm Island it got too expensive to ship.

Couple things:
- For those keeping track (I am) that’s the third cyclist hit in Oak Bay in as many months.
- A fractured ankle isn’t a “minor injury”. It’s a potential lifetime disability.
- If we weren’t taking so long on AT infrastructure in OB, we would have a shot at preventing these incidents.

Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

UBCM delegates just endorsed a resolution calling on the province to boost core funding for libraries by $30M

It was amended to add a call for the province to review the funding model for libraries

SR3 Increased Library Funding from the Province is Overdue UBCM Executive
Whereas libraries in BC are primarily (more than 90 percent) funded by local governments, and the provincial
government’s share of library funding has been decreasing – from 21 percent of total revenue collected by
libraries in 1986 to 6 percent in 2022;
And whereas the $14 million of core funding from the Province that covers all 71 library systems in BC has not
increased since 2010 while the population of BC grew by 29 percent and overall inflation went up 36 percent;
And whereas libraries are doing more to assist provincial objectives for the economic and social health of
communities including: providing information and services for small businesses and individuals seeking
employment; acting as critical locations of refuge during emergencies; operating as heating and cooling shelters;
providing front-line community services by offering space and supporting patrons with mental health and
addiction issues as well as barriers to housing; and supporting the process of reconciliation with Indigenous
peoples:
Therefore be it resolved that UBCM call on the provincial government to recognize the evolving and challenging
situation for public libraries as well as their unique role as community spaces, and increase the annual core
provincial funding for libraries to $30 million in keeping with the long-standing request made by the BC Public
Library Partners and the recommendation of the Province’s Select Standing Committee on Finance and
Government Services;
And be it further resolved this increase in core funding be increased on a yearly basis in keeping with cost of
living and inflationary pressures;
And be it further resolved that UBCM urge the provincial government to establish a dedicated capital funding
program to assist local governments in upgrading, expanding, and constructing library facilities to meet
community needs.

I’ve lived in #yyj for a decade plus and still haven’t figured out how and where drivers here learn the “honk as you come up behind a person on a bike, ostensibly to warn them” thing. Does anyone find this useful or effective? If you’re leaving required space when passing, nothing to worry about.
