An ant biting my insect specimen?! 🐜 ⚠️

We recently reported an unusual sighting: a fire ant biting a giant hawkmoth that was collected 38 years ago! 🤯

Here's a thread on this hidden ecological relationship and where to find it in NHCs! 🏛️

Let's take a look! 🔍 1/6

The INC-STEP final meeting is over!

It has been a very productive day, and we are very satisfied with the results. We leave with the hope of continuing to collaborate 🤝🏻 and making this pilot project something even bigger 🔝.

Result: Success! ✅

Starting up! 🙌☀️

Opening words from Domingo Marquina (UCM), Isabel Rey (MNCN-CSIC) and Rafael Zardoya (MNCN-CSIC) 🗣️

The focus is on #pollinator declines 📉 and the importance of collaborative projects like #INCSTEP in addressing them! 🐝🪰🦋

#NHMs and reference collections are key to monitoring them!

Ataque de un macho de abeja Anthidium a otro macho que estaba descansando. Al final parece que intenta clavarle las espinas que tienen estos machos en el culo. No he visto cosa más camorrista entre las abejas que los machos de este género.

Taxonomy is under constant change; species classification is revised continuously, and changes accumulate affecting biodiversity metrics & generating uncertainty that is rarely assessed. New paper out on an important issue — monitoring insects requires preserving the specimens. We explored this issue using data from the Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab, which has systematically destroyed most of their specimens for decades. A 🧵(1/10)

Big data, changing taxonomy, and ghost records: permanent preservation of collected specimens is essential for insect monitoring
Abstract. Successful long-term biodiversity monitoring requires consistent identification of all specimens, both those newly collected and those collected

Genus fact sheets, guidance during identification sessions and quizzes, as well as fieldwork! 🧩 All in the same week!

It's time to get to know the bee-diversity hotspot that is the Iberian Peninsula better!
#NameItToSaveIt 🇪🇸🤝🏼🇵🇹
Detail of one of the entomological boxes with pinned and labelled bee specimens brought to practice ID.

Borrowed by FLOWer Lab (Univ. of Coimbra). A live male Panurgus in a plastic tube. Collected from the CISE pollinator garden. Eight bee specimens were mounted on a foam plate and left to dry with pins.

All specimens were collected in accordance with standard practices, identified and labelled, and will be integrated into several NH collections.

Disclaimer: I collected the specimens for training purposes during the course. A pinned bee specimen in my hand. I don't remember the ID. It's cuticle shows metallic reflections –maybe a tiny male Seladonia? Below the specimen is a collection label.

This specimen belonged to the aforementioned FLOWer Lab.

Attending last week's basic #EPICBEE course in #Seia was a delight! 🇵🇹

Hugo Gaspar, Piluca Álvarez and Albano Soares were all fantastic teachers 🧑🏻‍🏫. I'm looking forward to the intermediate courses! 🎓

Training para-taxonomists to empower EU #taxonomy and tackle the pollinator's crisis! 📉🇪🇺

They are standing in the main room of the Centro de Interpretação da Serra da Estrela (CISE). Patricia García Pereira (Tagis) is preparing the room where the theoretical and identification lessons will take place at CISE. This is the first day of the course.

On the table arranged in a U-shape, there are several prepared binocular lenses. Group photo of all fourteen course attendees, plus the teachers and Paula Gonçalves, the organisation manager, at the main door of CISE.

A Tale of Two Commas.

Right now, the midsummer brood of Comma butterflies is emerging across Britain. Look closely and you may notice that it has two different colour forms: the typical, darker morph (right) and a much brighter, golden morph (left) known as f. hutchinsoni
