A bunch of folks have asked about my "Long Arc of Fascism" course - this is my opening lecture at our public teach-in last Spring.

Watch @naomiaklein.bsky.social open the Long Arc of Fascism teach-in by challenging the conventional, narrow understanding of fascism, particularly the idea that it is a uniquely European phenomenon that began in the 1920s or ’30s and was defeated in 1945.

What do this👇 lovely plant, lemur, and petrel have in common? They have populations where individuals were monitored for decades - and now provide amazing resources to compare complex responses of populations to threats. So, go beyond “it’s context dependent” to find common patterns.

Aotearoa New Zealand is incredibly beautiful and its biodiversity is mindblowing, a treasure to conserve, restore, and also to study! In this setting, we (Jason, Sandra, Duane, Otso and I) analysed how species of birds and plants connect ecosystems across the country 👇

Species traits and landscape structure can drive scale-dependent propagation of effects in ecosystems - Nature Communications
Ecological effects, such as disturbances, have a spatial dimension, but what influences their spatial propagation is not fully understood. Here, the authors find generalist and widespread species are ...

Qué bonita y precisa es la definición de felicidad de Diógenes, el cínico: "Una alegría serena y constante".

Here are some of protagonists in linking Aotearoa's ecosystems: the kererū (Hemiphaga novaeselandiae), a native pigeon; the silvereye (Zosterops lateralis), a small passerine self-introduced from Australia in the XIX century; or also the kea (Nestor notabilis), everyone's favourite mountain parrot!

We found that generalist and widespread species are disproportionately important for propagating biotic effects across landscapes, with the twist that native and exotic species also display differences. For doing all this, we inferred a country-wide spatial network of plant-frugivore interactions

Legendary ecologist.

"Jim Estes showed the world that the absence of a creature as unassuming as a sea otter could transform entire coastlines. In doing so, he reminded policymakers, scientists, and the public that human choices ripple outward in ways often unseen."

1. The philosophy of science sometimes gets an unearned reputation as a purely academic exercise that offers little by way of concrete tools for advancing research.

This is wrong.

And today, as we grapple with how AI is changing the nature of scientific activity, it's desperately wrong.

I don't agree with everything in this article, but I do agree with this:
"The act of writing the thing is the same thing as the thinking of it. If you can’t write it, you haven’t actually thought it." And AI allows us to 'not' think.

A warning to the young: just say no to AI
The substitution of Large Language Models for genuine thinking is a generational threat. At stake is no less than the life of the mind.
