Any org that services marginalized communities must have an executable plan to nuke their database. Keep nothing stored locally. Everything needs to be encrypted in the cloud so it can be remotely eviscerated if, ahem, someone comes for your lists & you should perhaps store this data overseas.

Had an interesting few moments in Rome this week. I’ve been studying Italian for over a year and for the first time ever I had several interactions where someone said something to me and I just reacted. I didn’t have to think about the words, I just heard it and responded. Something clicked.

I recently had a lawsuit where the AI (I used for personal research) technically was correct in the reading of the law but incorrect in how it might be used…because humans are involved. Two sides with 2 interpretations, an arbitrator with a 3rd, and an overly exuberant AI CONVINCED we were right.

It’s similar to the hype over smart contracts being able to handle any type of transaction, in which also with AI fails to understand that machines don’t do nuance and humans are faced with it daily.

The fact that I can take a document written in another language and throw that PDF or whatever into something like ChatGPT and within seconds, it summarizes and translates it, is remarkable.

AI hype is pretty ridiculous, and there’s a lot of bullshit around what it can cannot do at the moment, but I will tell you it does remarkable shit when it comes to things that if you worked long enough in technology, you know was nigh impossible for decades, like OCR.
