I'm reading through 'Akira' now, so this will be my thread dedicated to Book 1. I will make threads for the other books when I get to them.

I feel that Otomo Katsuhiro's work speaks powerfully and directly to the turbulent world we find ourselves in today, including what is happening in America.

hera has spies at every furry convention trying to catch this philandering ass when he does the “i’m gonna be an animal” trick again

seems like a non-insignificant percentage of rage against the machine's fanbase are young republican men driving SUVs bopping their head to anti-oil, pro-immigrant songs thinking the lyrics are about how they wish their suburban parents would get off their back
Tom Morello tweets: "Fascinating that all those “don’t tread on me” posers and their AR-15’s are nowhere to be seen and government tyranny is instead being opposed by a guy in an inflatable frog suit."

Someone named Manny replies: "@grok
why do some people say Tom Morello and band mates are RAGE FOR THE MACHINE and not against ?"

One of the very first RPGs.

(Let's not argue about "Dark Age" nomenclature again).

But also! The resolution is different, which creates other issues besides the different refresh rate.

Handhelds like the DS are nice because they have their own resolution/refresh rate, and a lot of times they are also region-free.

Yeah, the game speed can get all messed up, I forget if it gets slower or faster, but it can ruin parallax scrolling and music maybe.

My childhood cat was an amazing hunter.

One day I watched, transfixed, as he jumped up, grabbed a bird standing on our outdoor pool in his mouth, and then landed back on the ground in one fluid motion.

It helps that Japanese games are very compatible with American systems. I mean with NTSC and everything (also the electricity).

PAL is a different beast and can be really difficult.

Yeah, it could just be my imagination, but I don't know. Importing retro games and also modern games from Japan has been a big thing for a while.

So different from when I was a kid and you'd have to find the right magazine or store that would import the game for you!

Frog Suit is a good choice for protests in a harbor city, while I think in a desert or mountain the Racoon or Tanuki Suit is best.

I went to a retro game store for the first time in almost a year and it seemed like prices had really dropped there. Made me wonder if the tariffs and related shenanigans are decreasing demand from abroad.

About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages
Business Insider headline reads: UPS is telling customers that their packages coming to the US are marked for destruction.

Finally, both characters were painted by two of the best Japanese artists in the business: Ayami Kojima (Maria) and Yoshitaka Amano (Rydia).

These are iconic characters from the 1990s who I firmly believe will stand the test of time into the new century, like Mina Harker or Jane Eyre from the 19th.

Maria Renard

Another character whom we follow from childhood to adulthood, so that it feels like we grow older with them as we play their games from year-to-year.

Her opposition to Dracula, her quest to save Richter, and her reaching out to Alucard are open to interesting feminist readings.

Rydia

We really get to see her develop as a person--from a child who survived a genocide into a powerful young woman and summoner who ends up saving the men who killed her mother. Her romantic relationship with Edge makes sense given the death of his own parents.

Just an amazing, deep character.

Rydia from Final Fantasy IV.

Maria Renard from Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night.

They both love green, yes?

Opened the window so the cat would be able to enter the house through my room, only for her to walk up with a still-living rat in her mouth 💀

This is an exact encapsulation of why I moved to Bluesky.

No amount of handwringing in the Atlantic about how I owe some eternal Promethean suffering to the discourse is going to make me stay on a site I hate, that stopped doing anything for me professionally years ago.
Well – no. Bluesky may or may not be, as one centre-right friend who felt unwelcome put it, “self-righteous island”. But the idea that’s why we went is nonsense. That I’ve largely stopped posting on a site that’s done more to shape my career and social circle than the rest of the internet combined is less about avoiding rival opinions (I love arguing with people who are wrong!) than with the fact the site simply became unusable. It stopped generating the things (good jokes, interesting debate, clicks) I wanted; it became extremely good at generating the things (racists, pornbots, racist pornbots) I did not.
