That conversation inspired a Pitt Meadows resolution calling for stronger support for B.C. farmers, and I’m proud that UBCM delegates endorsed it!

Now, we hope the Provincial Government listens and takes action to better support the people who grow our food!

At UBCM 2024, Councillor Manion and I attended a session where BC Agriculture Council President Jenn Woike mentioned this chart (image 4), when we finally saw the chart, it was shocking. It clearly showed how much change is needed to provincial spending on agriculture in our province.

The City of Pitt Meadows got the backing from other cities for its lobby to increase funding for farm initiatives.

The city brought a resolution to the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention, held Sept. 22-26 in Victoria. It calls on the province to increase funding for agriculture.

According ot the BC Agriculture Council, B.C.’s five-year average of public spending on agriculture (as a portion of agriculture’s contribution to the GDP) was approximately 2.5 per cent – the lowest of all provinces, and well below the Canadian historical average of 12 per cent.

The city suggests an increase in provincial agricultural funding could be invested in much-needed programs and support, such as:

• Regional water sustainability plans, agricultural water reserves, and upgrades to water infrastructure storage to help alleviate the increasing water shortages brought on by climate change.

• Emergency management programs and training for agricultural liaisons during emergency events, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

• Programs to provide immediate economic relief for producers who have experienced adverse climate and emergency events.

• Incentives, funding programs and tax exemptions to enhance the viability of the agricultural sector.

• Programs for wage subsidies for farm workers to ensure a stable labour force.

• Additional Ministry staffing to support the above-mentioned programs and improve much-needed regulatory enforcement.

The UBCM convention, which is attended by politicians from cities and local governments across the province, voted to endorse the city's resolution.

As the child of 2 teachers, I saw firsthand the hours spent marking, the personal expenses to decorate classrooms and stock supplies, and the unwavering commitment teachers bring to helping students grow and succeed. It’s not an easy job, yet one that our community and society rely on so heavily.
