Hello new followers 👋 Thanks for following! My account is a mix of my two jobs (trade unions and numismatics research) with a sprinkling of allotments, poetry, and museums… Keep following if you like employment rights, coins, and vegetables! As a reward here’s a picture of a giant cottager’s kale 🌱

Pot of gold!

Rare Roman gold coin hoard uncovered near Didcot, Oxfordshire, by a metal detectorist in 1995. The pot contained 126 gold aurei, struck between AD 54-160. It would have taken a legionary soldier over ten years to earn this large sum!

I try to do plenty of harvest photos so I can look back in the depths of winter and cheer myself up - and encourage myself to get back out there! 🥶

Here’s the new radish patch 🌱. We’ve planted black and white winter radishes, and daikon as well. The nearest two rows are spinach rather than radish - I know it’s meant to be easy but I’ve always struggled so wish me luck! 🤞
An allotment bed with six rows of tiny green seedlings. The two nearest rows have longish leaves while the other rows have quite rounded leaves.

Harvest haul from the autumnal #allotment! Slightly terrified by the pumpkin 🤣! We’ve harvested the first winter radishes - and have planted lots more to keep going over the winter 🌱
A large pile of vegetables. In the centre is a giant pumpkin, it is surrounded by green tomatoes, kohlrabi, smaller squashes, cabbage, chillis, padron peppers, mini aubergines, and winter radishes.

Can't let #FindsFriday go past without another fine Iron Age coin. This is a base silver stater attributed (probably wrongly) to the Veneti, in southern Brittany. Diameter 22mm. Note the recumbent figure below the horse - what is he holding? #archaeology #numismatics 🏺

The public sector is blighted by pay issues, says @fdagensec.bsky.social

To address this and make progress with any potential reforms there needs to be strong political will and clear leadership from ministers. But there is no sense of what this government want to achieve. #lab25

If we want public services to succeed, they need to be able to attract and retain the best talent.

Looking forward to discussing pay and pension reform at our joint fringe meeting with @instituteforgovernment.org.uk at #Lab25

🆕️ Images of the two C9th dirhams from a huge Stockholm County hoard.

From the second half of the C12th, the hoard contains 24k+ coins!

Note the dirhams have been converted into pendants for what we might call the 'display economy'.

In 1828, eighteen-year old Charles Lefroy discovered this hoard of Anglo-Saxon coins.

Known as the 'Crondall Hoard' after the location of the find, it contained over 100 pieces. It remains the most important evidence for the start of English coinage.
