What's that? You didn't know boxfish made sound? Me neither...

It turns out all species (Atlantic & Pacific) do, yet little is known about how this evolved. A novel structure found only in the Atlantic species offered the answer, but it isn't quite what you think...🌍 πŸ§ͺ

Weevil, weevil, rock you!

Not quite as catchy as the Queen hit, the phylogeny of broad-nosed weevils was explored using mitochondrial genomes of 130 species, helping to classify the subfamily & uncover their biogeography! πŸŒπŸ‘‡πŸ§ͺ

A taxonomic revision published in our Zoological Journal in 2017 completely upended this belief, revealing the silky anteater (she who looks like an evil popcorn kernel) is actually 7 species! Read more in the paper here: buff.ly/WsIJz4y 2/2

Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum) might look like the cooking spice (Illicium verum), but don't be fooled! Anisatum seed pods are highly toxic. However, its leaves can be burned as incense.

Yesterday, the Linnean Library was graced with a group of keen knitters, gathered for an afternoon to learn how to #knit like a Victorian

Based on knitting patterns held in the Linnean Society archive belonging to Lady Pleasance Smith, attendees had the chance to create some #nature based patterns🍁
