Whenever I ponder the question of what comes after postmodernism, I always think about this passage from David Foster Wallace’s “E Unibus Pluram: Television & U.S. Fiction” (1990). It’s a spectacular essay, very prescient, and a clarion call to novelists, poets, and critics.

Join us for a reading and discussion with Nick Arvin, author of this year's Common Read book, Mad Boy, about a boy traversing the wilds of Maryland and Virginia during the war of 1812, on a quest to bury his mother and reunite his family. Arvin will read from the book, discuss the writing and research process, and talk about his double career path as a novelist and an engineer.

A huge reason why we're in this populist moment was because there was a failure to impose consequences on all the wall street people who brought about the great recession. Everyone started losing faith in institutions to maintain accountability making them susceptible to the prejudices of demogogues
