There will be many opportunities to protest in the coming days but throughout the most important political acts will be acts of real life connection and mutual support

in all seriousness, the heroic vision of newspapers was justifiably forged in the watergate and pentagon papers era. the owners of the post and the times very much did act for the public good (at great risk!)--and there are many other such examples but those are the big ones.

they were undoubtedly a public good -- in spite of themselves.

(disclaimer: this advice does not apply to large campaign donors, major corporations allied with the regime, big agricultural interests, and fellow travelers running other countries that rhyme with "concertina" if you are one or more of these things, the government will very much help you.)

it's true they have loaded it up with so much dumb stuff nowadays (see also: every other major tech product). but i've never expected a word processor to be a creative tool. it's just a tool for putting words on a page.

agree on scrivener. that product has always just baffled me.

trumpists are one of two things: 1) malevolent dunces or 2) craven opportunists who think they can profit from 1)

when 2's trade blows up, this thing is gonna sink fast. unfortunately we're tied to the masts, too.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.
