I don't think so at all. It'll go dormant, buried so deep that you might forget it's existence entirely.

But that spark is never gone forever, even if you need to rely on the flicker of another's flame to reignite it.

Of course they are. Every moment of compassion and love spreads to every person it touches, then every person they touch in turn. With that cycle, so long as someone's alive it's undying!

I could see the point in the case of a vow to God or to a partner. There are also children to consider. However, modern sensibilities seemed to have adjusted these concerns.
