Congrats to our summer under grad Ishani and her mentor @annavoss.bsky.social on a great summer in the lab and presentation to our group! Ishani learned ALL the techniques and actually likes western blots.

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees:

Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and…

1. Download your NSF award letters.

2. Print PDF your annual reports.

3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports.

NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov
Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.

Check out our new review led by our neuroscience graduate student Anna Voss @annavoss.bsky.social! Anna put together lots of useful tables of these gene families in mouse and human genomes in here. We hope you'll love these H2B genes as much as we do when you read this article!

Research on histone H2B has grown enormously in recent years. Here, Erica Korb (@korblab.bsky.social) and @annavoss.bsky.social discuss H2B genes, proteins, variants, and modifications, and propose a canonical human H2B sequence.

Breaking news: 22 states are suing to block NIH’s cutting of indirect costs.

See our updated story on the Friday night news and its aftermath. scim.ag/4hTJQ6v
NIH slashes overhead payments for research, sparking outrage and lawsuit
Move to cut indirect cost rate to 15% could cost universities billions of dollars

Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania has indirect rate of 70%, but they probably didn’t want to list that atop Harvard because defunding a children’s hospital might be perceived as problematic.

This is devastating

These overhead rates are negotiated. Lowering it unilaterally to 15% is another way to destroy science in the US. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
Tweet from NIH:

Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as "indirect costs." Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60%+ that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.

This is the first time I was asked to make this #astrocyte piece in cherry wood and I really like it. I worked on hard on making smooth curves. #neuro #art.
