#Birdtober Day 14: Costa's Hummingbird

I didn't quite get the effect I was going for with the gorget, but what colors! I also like how it looks like the heron's trying to eat the hummingbird, and the pheasant is like "you can't sit with us"

Bonus Great Blue Heron from last year's Birdtober. I was nervous about this prompt because I wanted to be sure they looked different enough without drawing the full body for either of them. I'm happy with how they both turned out!

For oaky-dokey on tumblr, another #Waymakers donor, a Red-winged Blackbird! This female has herself a cotton candy wonderland in the form of downy white cattails in autumn, lucky her!

I decided not to crop out the other birds when taking this photo, I think it looks kind of fun. I used my own reference photo from when a wayward Arctic Tern came to visit Minnesota, though mine was in non-breeding plumage

#Birdtober Day 10: Kalij Pheasant

After doing the Wyandotte Chicken, this one was way less intimidating! Kalijs have many variations of color, their metallic-looking feathers remind me of dragon scales no matter the color.

I finished this Northern Parula last week but only just got around to photographing it. Somehow, I've often seen these guys facing towards me, and I think they look adorably inquisitive.

#Birdtober Day 9: White-crested Helmetshrike

I love birds with fun hairdos. The eye-wattle is really interesting! Almost like a flower or sun. This Long-crested subspecies can be found in western part of its range in Africa.

What's the difference between an orbital ring and an eye ring of a #bird ? 👀
The eye ring is a tiny ring of feathers around the eye 🪶, while the orbital ring is a patch of bare skin.
