i love to make silly faces to entertain babies staring at me in public—and then usually they just keep staring, except slightly more confused

i try to temper my nostalgia impulse, i certainly have my critiques & my rolling of eyes as i skim, but also... there are Many Real Reasons that people with money & power have spent decades buying, flaying, & gutting any papers like this
astoehr.bsky.social
just seeing showtimes for "new" buñuel & bergman movies listed next to jules feiffer cartoons next to reports on proto-new left activism next to journalists slumming it in gay bars next to reviews of abstract art shows...

been dipping into the 1950s & '60s village voice archives lately & oh my GOD this is fucking personally enriching

(i felt so "lucky" to get to show that to friends in a marathon alongside movies like the act of seeing with one's own eyes & silverlake life: the view from here—everybody felt SAD but the sadness was HONEST.)

Hot take: Franju's Le Sang des Bêtes is maybe the most effective horror film ever made, far surpassing any gross-out, shock value movie I've ever seen. Extreme violence is scary because of what happens after the act, and Franju doesn't let you look away. There's no humor in it. It's dispassionate.

recently overheard a dad behind me in line for burritos telling his middle school age kiddo about our local rep house's upcoming nobuhiko obayashi series & the kid was audibly interested, having foreknowledge of the movie house. SO WHOLESOME 😭

wasn't there a later (& lesser) columbo episode that had originally been *written for* mcmillan & wife?

tom allen on desperate living for the village voice in 1977 (reviewed alongside rabid & bertrand blier's femmes fatales)
But I will swear by the following observations: There is not a single, gratuitous camera angle or shot in Desperate Living. Beneath the sleaze and the uniformly hysterical pitch of the acting, Waters is an austerely economical director who is figuratively comparable to Bresson. He is a driven, integral stylist. His troupe are beautiful ogres because they collaborate in absolute harmony with his ends, and are, therefore, not exploited. To paraphrase Rex Reed, Where else would these people go when the sun goes down?
None of these comments come easy; they are hard begrudged because to extrapolate praiseworthy style from chillingly alien content is to skate on thin ice and to risk critical dandyism.
