(i felt so "lucky" to get to show that to friends in a marathon alongside movies like the act of seeing with one's own eyes & silverlake life: the view from here—everybody felt SAD but the sadness was HONEST.)

Hot take: Franju's Le Sang des Bêtes is maybe the most effective horror film ever made, far surpassing any gross-out, shock value movie I've ever seen. Extreme violence is scary because of what happens after the act, and Franju doesn't let you look away. There's no humor in it. It's dispassionate.

recently overheard a dad behind me in line for burritos telling his middle school age kiddo about our local rep house's upcoming nobuhiko obayashi series & the kid was audibly interested, having foreknowledge of the movie house. SO WHOLESOME 😭
