I should also say that Persona is the first novel I've read since maybe Nevada that made me go, "I didn't know how much I (we) needed this."

emily’s edit transformed this book into something way beyond what i could have imagined when we started. i am so deeply grateful to her, @catfitzpatrick.net and @caseyplett.com for all their support and collaboration throughout the process 🖤🖤🖤

thrilled to be able to talk about this directly now: the first book I edited for LittlePuss is available for pre-order.

we’ve got a little marketing gimmick as usual but i’m gonna be sincere for a second

I think about this for being a writer, too. the difference between a writer and someone who writes some of the time is calling yourself one

I think everyone has a personal definition of a practitioner as opposed to a hobbyist, but everyone has criteria for it

it hurt me so good but i cannot stress enough how thrilling and bonkers it is. extreme not as in snuff or pornographic tragedy but extreme as in taking its ideas and ambitions and pushing them further than you thought possible. it’s exhilarating to read

@ravineangel.bsky.social wrote one of my all-time favorite books and put words to a pit in my stomach i could never have named. it's existentially terrifying and totally electric and i cannot wait for everyone to read it!!

being an editor is certainly difficult work, it never really gets easier, but it definitely isn't thankless

when i first read it over a year ago my first thought was, “people need to see this.” it is one of the significant accomplishments of my life so far that people will be able to read it, and that it will become a living part of trans culture
emializh.bsky.social
this is not to say it is easy to read. working on it took a lot out of me at times, but if there’s any book i feel like i’ve gained something from knowing inside out, it’s this one.
emializh.bsky.social
but really the credit is all Aoife’s for the result, which is astonishing. it is some of the most profound writing about trans despair and epistemic pessimism i’ve ever read, and somehow it redeems our deepest, most carefully-guarded anxieties into something beautiful.
emializh.bsky.social
if Girlfriends was the book that taught me how to write, Persona is the book that taught me how to edit. i owe a lot to Aoife for trusting me to guide a thorough rework of this intricately-layered novel, which is as philosophical as it is visceral, and brutal in exactly the way humans can be brutal
emializh.bsky.social
i couldn’t have been prepared for what the book was like. it starts in high gear and just keeps getting wilder and more relentless. when i first read it, i stayed up until 2 AM to finish it, and immediately showed it to Cat and Casey
emializh.bsky.social
this is one of a couple books we’ve done now that came in through the slush pile. you really never know what you’re gonna get reading submissions for a trans press, but even so this was an unusual submission: a one-sentence summary, an author bio that just said “N/A”

No, Sarah Schulman!!! You don’t know what you’re asking for!!!
‘“Well, who would you want to have perform at your inauguration?’ I asked Troy wistfully.

‘You know, something presidential. Like the Village People and Lorna Luft.’”
