Thing is, Netflix WANTS cinemas to die. That's their business model. Give us an incentive to go out and experience movies on the big screen with an audience, and we might just end up cancelling our subscriptions. At least that's their rationale.

uhhhhhhhh putting the finale on theater screens is what we in the business would call a "win-win"

it's not like you're cannibalizing your audience - Netflix subscribers already paid their monthly fee

The Duffer Brothers hoped the two-hour #StrangerThings series finale could be shown in movie theaters so everyone could "experience it at the same time with fans."
However, Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria shut down the idea, saying: "A lot of people — a lot, a lot, a lot of people — have watched Stranger Things on Netflix. It has not suffered from lack of conversation or community or sharing or fandom. I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want."

I doubt that doomscrolling is more important, it's just easier. I have to force myself to read these days, not because I don't want to, but because when I manage to sit down after work my brain goes "TIRED, READING HARD, GO NAP NOW".

Playing with the cat is always time well spent, though.

Getting people to read is much harder than getting them to glimpse at a picture, and even that one is hard already (he says guiltily, because he took two weeks to read your two FF14 fics).

Since OP said that aesthetics counts as useful, I double down on the "working" part: a spinning wormhole generator that requires 7$ billion a years to operate, but can't actually go anywhere because it's the only one in its network.
