We had an incredible evening on Saturday night at the Peterborough Small Business Awards 2025. The support and camaraderie between the small business owners were an inspiration. We were made to feel very special, and taking part was a very fulfilling experience.

I am so humbled by the support I received from other businesses, from friends, colleagues, and supporters. In the public vote, Authors in Oundle came in the top 10 of all the companies taking part, and I'm so grateful to everyone who took the time to vote for us.

Charming little octopus from a Roman villa at Villaquejida, León, Spain. Limestone, 2nd-3rd century AD.

Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 me

#Archaeology
My photo shows a mosaic fragment from the floor of a Roman villa in Spain, dated AD 100-200s. It depicts a cartoon-like, stylised octopus using red, yellow, white, and black limestone tesserae, against a white background. The front-facing octopus has a large red and white head/body outlined in black. Its yellow circular eyes are outlined in black with a central black dot. Below the head/body are eight writhing tentacles

Had a fantastic time running Can You Solve the Murder? Live last night for a wonderful audience at the East Riding Festival of Words. Organisers told me demand was so high we could have filled the room twice over. Thanks to all who took part! 😃🔍

Phenomenal. In my 10 year update of A Brief History, I make the point that in the first edition, not one disease had been successfully treated using gene therapy. Today that number is at least 7.

An insight into the greatest problem of the modern age. Where beliefs/feelings outrank facts even if based on nothing

The even more unbelievable crime fact (which I learned relatively recently) is that burglary has fallen by more than 90% since the 1990s.

Did anyone notice? Nope. Does anyone believe it? Nope. But is is true? It is!

Useful reminder from Peter Kellner on the problems we refuse to acknowledge are getting better, and the politics of hopelessness that this breeds

I planted two sweet potatoes this year, the foliage show no sign of dying down, when should I try and harvest them?

Hi Rachel, remember me? You did an incredible landscape for me of moorland, with trees and ravens. You brought it to my home in Oundle. Would love to reconnect. Just starting out here. I hope you are doing well. Helen.
