As I bond with other transfeminine people about similarities in harm from certain life experiences, the poem "A Prayer for Athena" I wrote several years ago keeps coming to mind

The stories say you burst from Zeus’s head
A grown woman, ready for battle
Born in violent bloodshed
Tearing herself from the shell of a man

I can’t help but wonder did you, too,
Mourn a girlhood that you could never have?
Did you come out a warrior
Knowing, as we all do, you would have to fight to survive?

Did you wait for the day when you could escape
The masculine shadow from which you came
Only to find that his legacy lingered
A stain that could never be washed away?

Did other goddesses look at you with suspicion?
Were you too loud, too brash, too tall, too fierce
Did they look at you and see his face
Did they shun you for being too close to manhood

Some called you Athena the Virgin
Is it because you hid your lust from them
Projecting a guileless feminine innocence
The spectre of “predator” always over your shoulder?

Were there skills you never learned
Buried in the darkness in him
Did you scramble to catch up, never feeling
Like you could make up for the time

Were you scorned? Pitied? Idolized? Reviled?
Were you always the goddess of wisdom?
Or did you have to chisel truths from your soul
To become enough to be treated as worthy

Did you know that when they built you a pedestal
A whole city to your name
It would only be a matter of time
Before they tore you back down
