Video games were a “silly hobby” too. Went that wen’t mainstream, we got the best AND the worst of it: a bigger industry, a larger community, but also cash grabs and low effort pandering.

Is the furry fandom meeting the same fate? On one hand, it could be a good thing. Fursuits and furry art will be taken more seriously by outsiders, and furries will be more open about their hobbies.

On the other hand, it’s just another market to sell slop to.

Geek culture went mainstream in the 2000s. When that happened, the quirky glasses-wearing computer nerd who watches Star Trek and plays video games stopped being your next door neighbor and became a wildly outdated stock character, simply because geek hobbies aren’t that niche anymore.

Between this and the Spirit Halloween masks, it's amusing but also the nightmare of furry going mainstream. 💀

Turn-based combat should never require real-time inputs.

Alternatively:

The hero gains a position of power/respect by making a false claim, does a good job keeping up the illusion of their abilities, is revealed to be a fraud during the climax, and must save the day without resorting to deception.

For some reason, this happens a lot in animated films.

Did he get that Mar-a-Lago surgery? His face looks like it would melt right off if you held a fire to it.

Character levels are a relic of TTRPG design and have no place in modern RPGs. Running around and killing things to make an XP number go up doesn’t feel fun or engaging, and makes it harder to get invested in the story and characters.

I’ve heard good things about Pillowfort. Will everyone be flocking to that?

I added that article to the “unusual articles” index (just like I did with Bad Dragon).

It’s also worth noting that metal (the music genre) hadn’t taken off yet. Before the “Big Four” (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer) came into the scene, most “metal” music was closer to hard rock.
ballythedog.bsky.social
The word “Metal” in the title isn’t referring to the music. It’s intended to convey the idea of something being “hardcore” (as in “That’s so metal!”).

Similar to how various sci-fi genres use the -punk suffix (steampunk, cyberpunk, atompunk).

Heavy Metal is one of my favorite films, but I do agree that it’s a product of its time. It’s based on an erotic sci-fi/fantasy magazine, and all the creativity and bizarre imagery translated well to the screen. But let’s face it: it’s rooted squarely in the early 80s, feeding off the late 70s.

Kind reminder that autism isn't just a thing that kids have.

Millions of autistic adults exist. I am one of them.

Autism— and ADHD— don't magically stop existing on your 18th birthday.
