My feet carried me to the very place. All about, the clubs were putting up their chairs, expelling the stragglers from their nights of reverie and into the cold, stark, November morning. Their neon lights were bled dry. Still one flickered on the periphery. A blue light in curling cursive that read ‘La Cour Éphémère’. Once again, the doorman watched me from his post beside the curtained entry, impassive; his muscular, tattooed arms folded over his barrel chest. The need within me had escaped its shackles and I felt the urgency of it like a mortal wound. Sweat plastered my clothes to my burning skin and the coarse crop of my brown hair to my scalp. A bone deep ache plagued me, my mind unsealing my scars and letting the pain of my old wounds reopen.
The doorman’s eyes locked with mine as I approached, a sweet warmth pouring from the entryway behind the blood-coloured curtain. Already my head was swimming. As desire thundered in my skull I felt my focus slipping away.
“Bienvenue, monsieur Lamb,” he said, his voice gruff. I dipped my head in greeting. He swept aside the curtain and I descended into the dark.
