I do feel that Abrams was painted into a corner with EP9, trying to fix what happened in EP8. Johnson just threw out plot points (eg Knights of Ren, Snoke, Snoke’s search for Luke, Rey’s parentage, etc). Even Mark Hamill told him he didn’t agree with the plot choices!

I only watch it when I’m too happy and want to get depressed about society!!

May I introduce you to Idiocracy. It’s a comedy, but after watching it, I had the fear of impending doom that it was more of a documentary!

I read and write, I explore and I question, I design and script and analyse, I interpret and communicate. I do this to train my mind in the hopes of one day generating new knowledge. New knowledge that might even be useful, and that no algorithm can yet be trained on.

Y'all. I just got ChatGPT to do everything in R for this manuscript. I mean EVERYTHING. And it's all legit and reproducible. I'm shook.

How are we mentoring our trainees in statistics now? Who needs to learn coding in R line by line, and who doesn't?

I feel I deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for the judicious use of a small syringe of saline with a red sticker, rather than a full on rant when the surgeon asks for muscle relaxation just before the end of the case.

I find it unfair that I was yet again not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year.

Nearly 12 years in the NHS and I have not sworn at any of the people who really needed it over that time.

It keeps me up at night. It may just be an experience thing, but publishing my code for the first time is in my top 5 most anxiogenic moments!

Well written, Ben. Working in medical research, your blog echoes my fears about clinicians using LLMs for their stats, without the stats literacy to critically appraise the LLM output. It wasn’t great before and I fear it’s only going to get worse.

I clearly had a lot of thoughts/feelings from reading Terry's blog post, so I wrote one of my own

It ended up being a bit of a stream-of-thought post but I think it captures some of my worries

Regardless of your circumstances, it doesn’t negate the fact that using LLMs for stats is unwise, for the multitude of reasons already outlined (see below). Ben (aka “some guy on Bluesky” from somewhere “with a democracy”) wrote eloquently of our fears when the ignorant do what you wrote about.

Just because an LLM can produce a report with various figures & charts doesn't mean it is good at statistics.

Because good statistics is not about producing code.

It's about deep knowledge of study design & conduct. In my opinion, 95% of all data science problems come from poor questions & design.

Since the sequels and in-between movies/TV series have come out, it’s made it a bit messy, but it still holds true. As long as the twist about Vader is maintained (ESB) before you meet him as a boy, Anakin’s downfall and redemption are more meaningful.

One reason I oppose associational or other non-causal language in research questions is it lets people think they don't need causal inference to answer causal questions.

(When the underlying question is causal, of course. Which it almost always is.)
benmoran.bsky.social
There seems to be a disconnect between the estimate and what that “association” means in terms of the underlying hypothesis. It’s removed the final step of interpretation of the result, and stating an “association between X and y” covers methodological laziness (of which I am certainly guilty of).
