2. "I worry that when the gritty cities I love are the focus of attack — and let’s be clear, they have already been violated by ICE — they won’t get the same treatment [as Portland] because they’re not “nice,” even though their people are just as deserving of support."

This piece contains a number of thoughts well worth pondering. Sharing just 2:
1. "How does one boycott & strike in a country where the government wants the economy to collapse?"

In short, the government had two separate grounds when it ordered him deported years ago:

1. The murder conviction
2. The controlled substance trafficking conviction.

The second one may be what dooms him to deportation — despite the 43 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

Pope Leo quotes Hannah Arendt:

“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and the distinction between true and false no longer exist."

🧵 I'm excited to share that my article "Democratic Backsliding and the Limits of Civilian Control of the Military" has been accepted @thejop.bsky.social.

It answers the question "how ought militaries act when civilian leaders turn on democratic institutions?"

Had dinner tonight with a friend who’s a middle school teacher in the southwest. They told me schools now have trainings for when ICE agents sweep through schools to take children, and it’s worse than active shooter trainings, because it’s the government kidnapping children.

This is where we are.

Seriously, Judges *do no do things like this*

They don't give their opinion to the media

They don't criticize how SCOTUS works

This is them breaking the emergency glass, folks

The Ghanaian Government is pleased to note that our refusal to accept Abrego Garcia has been duly acknowledged and complied with by the US
Department of Homeland Security.
We have also followed with satisfaction that DHS has today taken the appropriate steps to inform Garcia's lawyers and amend court submissions to reflect the fact that Ghana cannot be an option for Garcia's deportation.
The Mahama Administration will continue to be transparent and truthful to Ghanaians at all times.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.
On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

New: Judge Perry's ruling against Texas troops in Chicago is a banger.

1. Invokes Hamilton
2. Rips into ICE for lying
3. Says "law enforcement officers who go into an event expecting 'a shitshow' are much more likely to experience one than those who go into the event prepared to de-escalate it.

Our classrooms are not safe for us or regular students. Our universities canot be relied upon to protect us. You have to keep speaking up about this. Faculty already are, but we need folks who aren’t in academia raising the alarm for everyone else. The End.
