My take: Engineering *is* important. Ideas are cheap. Novelty is overrated. "Hyperparameter tuning" is a cynically dismissive term for something that is in fact the real, difficult problem.

Sometimes I’ll see a paper that implements an idea I’ve had but implements it poorly for engineering reasons. But then it’s hard to write a follow up paper because it’s not “novel” anymore

Great news for cancer patients. Ministry of Health's announcement to make available new treatments in cancer care earlier will save and extend lives.

Patients at UHN's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and across Ontario now have faster access to breakthrough cancer therapies.

A useful analogy.

One can say that much of the progress in computer programming is aligned with ever increasing levels abstraction.
LLM-based coding tools are "just" a next level.

The choice of objective, and the measure of success, still remains something external to the tool.

The new trend of #AI #LLM tools that help people achieve their tasks faster isn't too different to the shift in Computer Programming between the pre-compilers world and the world were compilers allowed scientists to define computer languages in a more natural way:
