(Also: hey, it’s Avon! Always nice to see Wood Harris getting work.)

One Battle After Another was fantastic and… damn. Sometimes you end up making the perfect movie for the moment by horrible accident of timing.

Evening viewing recommendation? Watch A BETTER TOMORROW (1986) on our Hong Kong Action Classics collection! The box-office sensation that established director John Woo as the king of 1980s Hong Kong action cinema and set the standard for the heroic bloodshed genre.

I feel like if you think of it as a B+ tier NIN EP awkwardly stapled to an A tier Reznor+Ross soundtrack, both parts of it land better but the inter-track shifts between them still feel kinda awkward.

The problems with the new one are (a) they should have waited another 40 years to get the same level of VFX step change, and (b) Jared fucking Leto? Why?

I think if you think of Tron not so much as a movie as a series of SIGGRAPH demo reels attached to bangin' soundtracks (your objection to the Daft Punk one is noted and dismissed) the phenomenon makes a lot more sense. It's the world's highest-budget demoscene video.

Worse: because you have to interact with other creatures and not injure them or yourself, movement is 4D! Oops, did our problem space just increase by an exponent or ten? Shit, I think it did.

I'm envious -- at this point it seems like I'm probably gonna have to book a trip to Mexico or overseas if I wanna do that (which I do).

Yeah, I understand that boutique shops just don't have access to the kinds of economies of scale that Lodge and Le Crueset etc have, but paying $150 or more for what at the end of the day is a pound or two of pig iron just feels like a statement about disposable income.

One of these days we’re going to get the full story of what the actual fuck has been going on with him and his kid for the last 10+ years and I expect it to be legendarily nuts: the bits we already know (the all-meat diet, the weird hospitalization in Russia) are already off the hook.

Democrats has a trifecta in 2021 and did not do any of these things. Maybe Dems should be taking notes on power politics here.

Thune: "If the Democrats had won the majority, they probably would've tried to nuke the filibuster. And then you'd have four new senators from Puerto Rico and DC, you'd have a packed Supreme Court, you'd have abortion on demand ... "

Like it really should not be the case that the GOP gets to looks like a vital, thriving, forward-looking organization via the trick of putting Ted fucking Cruz and Marco fucking Rubio in front of cameras constantly, but when the D leadership's first instinct is to hand the ball to the cryptkeeper...

Honestly even sexagenarians are a questionable idea right now, although for a different set of reasons. Nothing says "we are old, out of touch and have no bench" like only ever putting people over retirement age on camera when the opposition... doesn't do that.

Amen. I believe that gravity is a law and that no one can shirk it forever, but the number of people who've lost their shirts trying to time this one only keeps growing.

Newsom signed SB79!

*turns and stares significantly at the corner of 16th and Mission streets*

The time of fucking around is over. Let the finding out commence!

Not exaggerating when I say that SB 79, a bill making it easier to build housing near mass transit, is the most consequential piece of legislation that the Democratic Party has passed all year. Saying no to the worst people in our coalition proves we're serious about the future.

There's a bunch of them actually -- Finex and The Field Company are the names I know offhand -- but they're hella expensive compared to Lodge and opinions seem to differ wildly as to whether they're worth it.

Thank you, @cmrestler.bsky.social. Restaurants should have the option of keeping outdoor dining all year and New Yorkers should have the option of taking advantage of it. Folks, call your City Council rep and ask them to support this bill. Let's set the stage for the Mamdani administration.

We introduced a bill to restore year-round open dining and make it easier for restaraunts.

Outdoor dining was a silver lining of the pandemic, and New Yorkers want it back. We can simplify the process for restaurants to secure permits and give us more places to dine together.
