Reading _Light From Uncommon Stars_ and I have never found anything as distressing as the Endplague, the book's answer to the Fermi Paradox: civilizations eventually confront despair and their own mortality with atavistic self-murder.

Another planet set on fire. This has happened before. Over and over. Leaders drawing new plans, finding new scapegoats.
A civilization coming to the end of its life.

So don't think you are special. You are a digit, trying to dodge statistics. And, while you are still insignificant, leave now.

I think someday there will be room to explore the difference between "hate" and sadism. I don't know if Trump voters are truly emotionally overwhelmed by the thought of trans people and immigrants, as much as they enjoy recreationally watching them squirm in agony.

I found this piece sad too, but mostly because it is part of a years-long effort by progressives to understand what "really" animates Trump voters.

We already know! It is racism, misogyny and misinformation. I know that sounds condescending or whatever but it's simply what all evidence suggests.
