I think "demographics is destiny" is often overrated.

But when I look at the average age of housing opponent and the average age of housing advocates, it's not hard to see what way the wind is blowing.

There has been effectively zero backlash to the housing bills passed over the last 8 years.

The primary NIMBY organizations that have opposed housing bills and tried to run a statewide initiative are less successful year over year.

In large part because they are bleeding members as they age out

San Diego is preparing 2 community plan updates impacted by SB79: Clairemont and College. These are my rough sketches of the half-mile radii around trolley stops. Yellow is where the city wanted to keep single-family zoning.

Important to remember that not only did we pass #SB79, the biggest transit-oriented upzoning bill ever, we also passed a clean CEQA exemption for new multifamily infill housing.

This is, bar none, the biggest year in state action on housing policy reform in California history. Not even close.

This is what dooms him in the end. Politics is a repeated game. Even under authoritarian conditions. People need to know that your behavior is going to be predictable in certain ways. Interests that would happily off on mass graves will eventually stop tolerating unreliability.
